This week all groups had an opportunity to use a bow saw. The bow saw is a tool particularly good for cutting wood.
Prior to using any tools staff have a safety briefing with children to discuss the risks that come along with using them. As this is week 8 children are aware and are talking about hazards and risks more frequently without adult encouragement.
To make our tree cookies we used wood that we had previously cut, the reason we do this is to ensure we are not removing any wood from the woodland that doesn’t need to be removed. Sticks and broken trees are a good resource of nutrients for the soil in the wood therefore we like to leave as much of them their to decompose, they also provide habitats for mini beasts.
Some children were more interested in exploring and using the rope swings, they will have the opportunity to use the bow saw next week again if they choose.
Others liked looking for minibeasts and climbing trees.
This week the children have been talking about the gingerbread man. We read the story and the children decided that they wanted to bake their own. We looked on the computer for the recipe and together we chose the perfect one. The children enjoyed creating their own gingerbread men.
We started off by measuring out the ingredients.
“300 is a lot of flour”
We then combined them all together in a bowl and mixed them.
“I’m using my big strong muscles to mix the ingredients”
We then measured out the perfect amount of butter.
“This is a lot of butter”
Once we had made a dough we rolled it out flat.
“I’m rolling it”
We then used our cutters to cut out our gingerbread men shapes
“Mine is going to be the biggest”
Once our gingerbread men were cooked and had cooled down, we decorated them.
“i’m putting buttons on my one”
“I just want icing on mine”
The toddlers had a great time in the garden this week. The rain did not stop them!! They made their own characters out of potatoes, painting them and decorating them with different materials. Some of the children used feathers to give their potatoes wings or superhero capes!! They were very proud of their unique creations and had fun chatting about what they were called.
“Mine is called Super Angel Girl!!”
Today the toddlers enjoyed joining some of our parents for a bookbug session with Jo and Sharon.
We all had fun listening to the story of The Gingerbread Man, participating in action songs, rhymes and singing with the bookbugs.
Some of the children were dressed up as their favourite characters from books to celebrate World book Day.
