Outdoor Learning

P1 have been taking advantage of the excellent sunny weather recently and getting outside as much as possible. Here are some photos of all the super things we have been getting up to.

We will be continuing to take our learning outdoors throughout the rest of the summer term, so please ensure that the children come to school with sunscreen and a sun hat.

Build a Sandwich Day

P1 had a fantastic time at the Build a Sandwich day yesterday. We loved choosing our bread and our fillings. A huge thank you to the kitchen for organising this event!

Making lemonade

Today the Blue reading group read ‘Mr Marvel and the Lemonade’, a story about a magician who makes lemonade. To extend our learning, we then followed and sequenced instructions to make our very own lemonade. We all agreed it was delicious!

Scroll down for the recipe, if you wish to try making some at home.

Lemonade

  1. First, make the sugar syrup. Put 200g caster sugar and 250ml water into a saucepan and heat gently until the sugar has dissolved. This makes enough syrup for 2 jugfuls and it can be kept in the fridge for up to 1 week. Remember to ask an adult for help with this, as it involves using the cooker.

2. Squeeze the juice from 6 lemons into a jug.

3. Add in half the sugar syrup and fill up the rest of the jug with cold water.

4. Mix to combine and add ice and lemon slices if desired.

5. Enjoy!

STEM Week: Wednesday 13th March

Today P1 were very busy learning about sound. We worked in our STEM groups to make our own musical instruments.

We also carried out an investigation to see what would happen to gummy bears in various solutions: water, salt water, vinegar water and baking soda water. We discovered that the bear shrunk in salt water, grew the most in vinegar water and, by the end of the day, almost all the bears had started to dissolve and disintegrate! This prompted a lot of discussion and we enjoyed using the magnifying glasses to track progress throughout the day.

STEM week: Tuesday 12th March

Today we had a fantastic time at the Think Science workshop.

We also had another tuff tray experiment. Today we investigated what would happen if we mixed vinegar and baking soda together. We discovered that it fizzed!

STEM Week: Monday 11th March

P1 had a super exciting day today for the start of STEM week.

We loved seeing Mario and Luigi at the Launch Assembly and had a fantastic time designing our cars for the Busby Grand Prix.

Dr Poltronieri came to visit us in the afternoon to tell us all about her job making medicines. We couldn’t believe that new medicines can take up to 20 years to test and produce! It was fascinating to hear all about her work and we really enjoyed her chemical experiments. It was amazing to see how the gloves filled with dry ice grew so huge!

Finally, we loved getting the chance to make our own potions at the tuff  tray.  We mixed and poured and had lots of great discussions about what our potions would do. We can’t wait to see what other fun tuff tray challenges are out this week and to attend all our other exciting workshops and activities!

World Book Day

For World Book Day, P1 read ‘The Day the Crayons Quit’ by Drew Dwyer and we enjoyed all our exciting learning experiences based on the book. We coloured pictures in unusual and creative ways, we made our own placards and we wrote postcards from the crayons.

We also went outside with P2 to show off our fantastic costumes.

Thank you to everyone for their donations!

Christmas

P1 have been very busy this week, doing lots of Christmas activities. We have wrapped presents, decorated gingerbread biscuits, made fabulous calendars and cards and, of course, we had a wonderful time at our Christmas party!

We would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a lovely holiday when it comes! See you in 2019.
