Introduction to The Solar System

In Primary 6, we have been learning about the solar system. Even though we were introduced to the topic last week, we have already learned so many interesting facts. For example:

  • There were originally 9 planets, however in 2006 Pluto was demoted to a dwarf planet.
  • Mars is also known as the Red Planet. Scientists found frozen water on Mars and realised that perhaps there could be life on it. They have sent robots onto Mars to discover if there really is life on Mars! Mars also has a huge volcano that is twice the size of Mount Everest.
  • There are two categories of planets: Terrestrial Planets (have rocky surfaces) and Gas Giants (massive and made up of gas).
  • Jupiter’s mass is greater than all of the planets in the solar system put together, it has a raging storm called the Great Red Spot.
  • Venus’ surface is covered in lots of volcanoes and lava, it has no water because it is too hot.

We have done a read to learn passage about the solar system where we highlighted key information and identified the main idea.  Jeanie P6b

We also made notes using a mind map whilst watching videos on tigtag about the Terrestrial Planets and Gas Giants. Jamie P6b

We are really enjoying learning about the solar system. We are looking forward to telling you more about it in the future.
