Practical Maths

We have been learning about the properties of circles. First  we folded circles into quarters to identify the mid point, we then  measured the diameter, radius and circumference using rulers and string. We discussed the results and identified that the diameter is double the size of the radius and the circumference is approximately 3 times the diameter. Next we practiced drawing circles of varying sizes using a compass and again measured the circles to  test  the       rules, D=2R,  R= 1/2 D and C= approx 3 D.

We will use these skills to create a scaled down drawing of the solar system.

Introduction to The Solar System

In Primary 6, we have been learning about the solar system. Even though we were introduced to the topic last week, we have already learned so many interesting facts. For example:

  • There were originally 9 planets, however in 2006 Pluto was demoted to a dwarf planet.
  • Mars is also known as the Red Planet. Scientists found frozen water on Mars and realised that perhaps there could be life on it. They have sent robots onto Mars to discover if there really is life on Mars! Mars also has a huge volcano that is twice the size of Mount Everest.
  • There are two categories of planets: Terrestrial Planets (have rocky surfaces) and Gas Giants (massive and made up of gas).
  • Jupiter’s mass is greater than all of the planets in the solar system put together, it has a raging storm called the Great Red Spot.
  • Venus’ surface is covered in lots of volcanoes and lava, it has no water because it is too hot.

We have done a read to learn passage about the solar system where we highlighted key information and identified the main idea.  Jeanie P6b

We also made notes using a mind map whilst watching videos on tigtag about the Terrestrial Planets and Gas Giants. Jamie P6b

We are really enjoying learning about the solar system. We are looking forward to telling you more about it in the future.

Our Senses

As part of out topic about  Senses and Vibrations and Waves, we have learned that humans have five senses: hearing, touch, taste, smell and sight.

To understand these, we had to work in pairs to research our chosen sense. We made bulleted lists and annotated diagrams in our jotters. After that we had to design a poster to share the information that we had discovered.

Now, our next job is to investigate sound. Look out for further posts about this, as we find out more!
