At the beginning of the year we were learning about what plants need in order to grow and develop. As part of this we started to grow potatoes in our classroom and have been looking after them over the last three months.
Unfortunately, even though they were doing really well, they recently started to die. We think this may have been from overheating, as we had our planter right beside a large radiator. When we dug up our plants we did find some very small potatoes, but not many.
We watched a video clip of an artist using tone to show light and dark areas of fruit. We were very pleased with our finished results. Thomas was particularly successful.
Today we were learning about the different people who were involved in trying to get the Slave Trade abolished and developing our ‘finding information’ skills. We achieved this by watching clips from the 2006 film ‘Amazing Grace’, making notes on the abolition movement, and the people involved.
We have been working to develop our levels of fitness. As part of that we took part in a 1500m, Olympic style event. There was great determination shown by everyone in the class in completing the full 1500m – even if we lost a shoe or two along the way!
This week we finished our learning on multiplication. We have been developing our ability to use multiplication to solve problems. We achieved this through many practical activities and worksheets.
In Social Studies this week we were developing our skills in using primary and secondary sources to research past events. We were learning about the Transatlantic Slave Trade, often known as the ‘Triangular Trade’. We then used our skills to plot a summary of the Transatlantic Slave Trade onto a world map.
Over the last few weeks we have been developing our movement, teamwork, throwing and catching skills through different netball related activities. We then used these skills to take part in a netball competition with Primary 5s from other East Renfrewshire schools.
This week we finished our learning about 3D objects and 2D shape. We were learning to identify the different properties of 3D objects, and looked at how they are used in our environment. We achieved this through lots of different activities including making 3D models.
Today we were developing our throwing and catching skills. We were consolidating our work on our ‘bounce pass’ from last week, and working on our ‘chest pass’. We needed to use good ball control and hand/eye co-ordination skills to help us develop.
As part of ‘National Poetry week’ we used what we learned about ‘Acrostic Poems’ to write our own: using interesting words and ordering our poem so that the first letter of each line spelt out our theme ‘Light and Dark’.
