Bikeability2 training March to June

Bikeability 2 

We have been doing Bikeability since March with P6b.

The Barrhead Cycle centre checked out all our bikes.

First we did some sessions in the playground where we learned how to perform an M check – to make sure our bikes were roadworthy.

We learned how to carry out a safe start plus the safe stop. Then we did the fast race and the slow race to improve control also we did an emergency stop.

After that we learned how to do left turn, right turn and a U-turn and we did overtaking a parked car. (We used cones as a car.)

Next we went out on the road for a few weeks using Tinto Drive and Pentland road. We practised other manoeuvres:- passing a side road, left turns, safe stop etc.

We had Craig helping from Bikeability Scotland and Mrs Burns and Mr Ogilvie helped during on road training. A big thanks to them.

We also learned about road safety, road signs and the highway code and sat a theory test. Our final assessment was on the 8th June – we hope we did well.

Ross – Bikeability is fun and gets us outside in the fresh air.

Kenzie – I have enjoyed Bikeability, I have improved my cycling skills.

Jamie – It is interesting to learn the correct signals.

World Book Day March

On Thursday 9th March the whole school visited the Foundry in Barrhead. We took our £1 gift vouchers for World Book Day and each pupil collected a book that they had chosen.

Where’s Wally was the most popular book in our class.

On Friday 10th March we had an assembly where we dressed as our favourite characters. Each class also read out a piece of writing, Kirstie read her story, ” If I could travel in time .”


Thomas  was Wimpy kid.

Mia was Cat in the Hat.

Ross was Gansta Granny and won the best dressed in P6a.

Kirstie was Annie.

Emily was Gabby Douglas.

Olivia , Lily and Paige were Hermione.

Kenzie was Pikachu.

Mrs Moody was Clipper the clown.

It was great to see all the different costumes that everyone was wearing.

Health and wellbeing – Expressive Art

On Thursday 23rd February the whole school took part in a Danceathon. Miss Graham in P6b organised for a dance coach called Natalie to come and give dance lessons to the P4-7. We learned choreography to September from the movie Trolls.  We also went to the music room and danced to Just Dance. Some people dressed in dance gear.

We then performed in front of parents and friends who came to watch at the end of the day we also danced to a few Just Dance tracks and the P1-3 joined us.

Kirstie – The Danceathon was something different. It was really fun.

George  – It was lots of fun and it helped to keep us fit.

Olivia  – It was very entertaining and is a good way to keep fit.

Barrhead Cluster Badminton Big Hit Festival 31/1/17

The Big Hit Badminton Festival 

On Tuesday 31st January 2017 P6a and P6b went to the Foundry on a bus to the badminton big hit festival.When we got there we went in to the gym hall where Carlibar and Cross Arthurlie  and other cluster schools were already there. We were split into groups then we went and did different activities e.g:- Clear the Court ,Coast to Coast, Chaos, Nettie Badminton, Relay Race.

We did around 10 activities in a carousel. We also met the mascot Nessie, everyone  was crowding him to get high fives. Later we did even more activities and practised our forehand and backhand shots and tried to get them in hoops.

Finally all the schools gathered together and we said thank you to everyone and they gave us Big Hit wristbands. Afterwards we were mostly tired and we travelled back home on the bus.

A big thank you to Mr McGunnigle for organising the event for us with Badminton Scotland.

Kenzie – ” the event was really fun and tired us out”.

Lewis – ” we learned new skills , like how to serve using backhand and forehand shots”.

Connor – ” I discovered I was better at badminton than I thought.”

Scotland Street School visit – A Victorian School Jan

On Tuesday 24th January P6a and P6b went to Scotland Street School.  In Social Studies we are learning about life in Victorian times.  We are learning about the period 1837-1901.

We travelled by bus it took us 30 mins. We had our snack in the café and then went on the tour. We split into two groups boys and girls. We were given costumes – waistcoats and collars, girls had white tunics. We were lined up in straight lines smallest to tallest then we had to use our arms to make sure we were in a straight line and that we had equal spaces between each other.

The teacher Mr Valentine grouped us into desks. He was very strict and stern looking and spoke in a deep and threatening tone. We had to stand up when he spoke to us and call him Sir.

We had to recite our times tables , we did a mental maths test using slates and crayons, we had a spelling test and we had to copy out our words in Copperplate writing using  ink, a blotting sheet and fountain pens. It was quite tricky to use these pens without smudging or making a blot. Left handed people were not allowed to use their left hand in Victorian days but he allowed us to. We had to sing a song  for Queen Victoria  and learned about playground games and songs. Ross volunteered to get the belt ! However Mr Valentine hit the desk instead of his hand and a spark cam off the desk We talked about similarities and differences between Victorian schools and modern day schools.

Emily – “It was lots of fun to experience what school was like in Victorian times although at some points I was a bit scared.”

Connor- ” It felt weird when the girls and boys were separated and had to use separate doors, stairs and playgrounds.”

Lewis – ” It felt weird putting on the head teachers cloak and ringing the school bell”.

Trip to Scottish Parliament in Holyrood Edinburgh

On Wed 2nd November P6a and P6b visited the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh. We travelled by bus , it took us 1 hr and 30 mins to get there.

We had to go through security, which meant we put our bags and jackets into a tray which went through a scanner. We also had to go through a scanner.

Once we got in we went to the Education Centre where we learned about the history of the Parliament and worked in groups using props to tell the story of the parliament.  Our MSP Tom Arthur came to visit us too while we were there.

We then had a tour of  the building and we visited the debating chamber, garden room and saw some of the meeting rooms. Some MSP’s were holding committee meetings. We then had a visit from Maurice Golden from the Conservative Party and Ken Macintosh who is the Presiding Officer. He is in charge of all the MSP’s.

We really enjoyed our trip and learned lots about the Parliament. It was great to see the inside of the building.

Paige –  ” I enjoyed the question and answer session with the MSP’s”

Gary-  ” I liked going into the Debating Chamber and hearing what they were going to be discussing”.

Aiden-  ” I enjoyed getting to see where all the different parties sat in the Chamber”.

A big thank you to Mrs Muir and Mrs Burns ( parent helper) who came along to help us on our trip.

Literacy – Writing a newspaper report.

We summarised the key events of chapter 5 of Why the Whales Came.  We identified the key features of a newspaper report by looking at articles.

We created a plan then wrote a hard copy report. We then re drafted by self correcting to produce a soft copy using Microsoft Word.

Ross- Once I knew what the features of a report were , I found it quite easy.

Adrian – I found the redrafting quite tricky at first but them it became easier.

 

Expressive Arts -P6 / P3 Assembly -The chocolate room

We worked collaboratively with P3 on creating props and artwork for our joint assembly.  We looked at images of the chocolate room from the movies based on  the book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.  We had been learning about Roald Dahl  when celebrating 100 years since his birth. We thought about colour and form then created our own paintings.

P3 chose their 3 favourites which we used during our class assembly.

Thomas – I made my chocolate room nice and colourful and was really happy it was chosen.

George – My chocolate room was designed to look like the one in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory movie.

Kirstie – My chocolate room came  partly from the movie version and some of my own ideas.

Scottish Parliament – Social Studies

On 19th September  our local MSP Tom Arthur came to visit the two primary six classes . Mr Arthur is the MSP for Renfrewshire South.  We had written a formal letter to Mr Arthur inviting him to come to our school. We prepared questions to ask about the Scottish Parliament and about his job as an MSP. Everyone in P6 had the chance to ask a question.

Lily – It was fascinating to hear all the different things he had to do as part of his job.

Jamie – We learned a lot about the Parliament building in Edinburgh.

Olivia – His answers to our questions were very interesting.

Numeracy – Scale drawing

We drew a line drawing of a boat using a grid.  We then used a larger grid to upscale our drawings to A3 size. We then painted our boats in the style of the artist Claude Monet.

We looked at the map of the Scilly isles and we used the grid system to create a larger version of the map. We worked in groups to draw and paint our enlarged maps. We will use this to record our personal points each week , our boats will sail around the Scilly Isles.

Connor  – I enjoyed painting the sea scape, using different colours to create the effect of movement.

Kenzie – I enjoyed the challenge of up scaling the boat from A4 to A3

Mia – I enjoyed mixing the paints to create different shades to create the effect of the sea and sky.
