Functional Writing: Instructions 2
This week we finished off our Functional Writing topic on Instructions. We have been learning to logically organise steps and information and to use a variety of connectives to join them together. Today we tied our learning in Writing to Technologies where we developed our understanding of food preparation by using different resources to make Ice Lollies from fruit juices. After that we wrote a set of instructions based on what we had learned to do.
“They were delicious!” – Paige
Trip to Amazonia
This week we went on our School Trip to Amazonia in Strathclyde Country Park. Building on our learning of how sound vibrations are carried we learned about different animals who live in the rainforest and how they communicate with each other. We even got to hold some of them!
“It was a really cool experience and we got to see animals we usually don’t get to see in this country.” – Lily
“I loved holding the animals.” – Gary
“I loved getting to see all the animals.” – Aiden
Electrical Circuits
In Science we have been learning about electrical components and how they can be used to make a variety of electrial circuits. We started by looking at different symbols and what they represent. Then, after learning how energy travels around a circuit we used a range of electrical components to help make a variety of different circuits e.g. a torch, buzzer and an electric motor.
“I really enjoyed experimenting with the different components.” – Kenzie
“I had an amazing time doing this and it was so fun.” – Paige
RME Assembly
Over the last few weeks we have been learning about celebrations in different religions. To do this we looked at weddings and the various aspects of these celebrations in Christianity, Islam and Judaism. We tied our learning in RME to other curricular areas e.g. Technologies where we designed and built window frames.
We also used Weddings as our topic for our work in Expressive Arts. As part of this, with Primary 2 we turned our frames into stained glass windows just like you might see in a cathedral.
We then learned the song ‘Love Story’ by Taylor Swift and prepared and performed a drama of a Christian Wedding at our learning and teaching assembly.
“It was really good fun and amazing!” – Emily
“I really enjoyed preparing and performing the drama of a Christian wedding.” – Lewis
Helping around the home
This week we have taken time to develop different domestic skills in order to help around the home. This involved taking responsibility for washing, ironing, cooking and hoovering around the school. These are skills that will help us throughout our lives and support us to develop as Responsible Citizens.
“I now know how to use a hoover, which means that I can help around the house” – George
“Now that I know how to cook, I look forward to helping to cook dinner for my family” – Kirstie
Functional Writing: Instructions
This week we started looking at instructions as part of our writing. To do this we played board games in groups and wrote down a set of instructions explaining what resources we needed and how to play the game. Later we changed groups and used the instructions left for us to try and play the next game, then we left the group feedback on their instructions using our success criteria.
“I learned how to write instructions. It was really fun playing the games and writing instructions.” – Kenzie
Artist Study: Andy Warhol
In Primary 5a we have been learning about Pop Art and Andy Warhol as part of our Art lessons. We started by finding out about his life and work, before looking at pieces of his artwork to identify his style e.g. repetition and his use of colour. Using what we learnt about his style we then started to create our own pieces of art.
“We got to make our artwork using things that we see every day or people that everyone knows. I liked it a lot” – Adrian
‘500 Words’ Competition
Generation Science Event
On Wednesday afternoon we attended a ‘Generation Science’ event, where we continued our work on Sound, Vibrations and Waves that we have been doing in class. We got to take part in lots of great activities and experiments.
“I thought it was really fun, and the people made us laugh. I learnt about vibrations and how sound gets to the person” – Paige
