{"id":96,"date":"2017-08-30T11:35:49","date_gmt":"2017-08-30T11:35:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/er\/autismadvisors\/?page_id=96"},"modified":"2019-12-10T15:18:24","modified_gmt":"2019-12-10T15:18:24","slug":"what-is-autism","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/er\/autismadvisors\/what-is-autism\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Autism Spectrum Disorder?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a id=\"irc_mil\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.biomedcentral.com\/on-biology\/2018\/07\/30\/detecting-autism-spectrum-disorders-biomarker-discoveries\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"irc_mi\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.biomedcentral.com\/on-biology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2018\/03\/feature-image-square-1-620x342.jpg\" alt=\"Image result for autism spectrum\" width=\"366\" height=\"202\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Autism Spectrum Disorder is a diagnostic term that is used by clinicians to describe the\u00a0profile of\u00a0individuals who have additional support needs in the areas of <em>social communication, social <\/em><em>interaction<\/em> and <em>flexibility of thinking<\/em>.\u00a0 Historically, these needs\u00a0were often referred to in\u00a0literature as\u00a0a &#8216;triad of impairments&#8217; (Wing &amp; Gould, 1979).<\/p>\n<p>From a clinical perspective, Autism Spectrum Disorder is a pervasive developmental disorder.<\/p>\n<p>The word &#8216;Autistic&#8217; derives from the word\u00a0&#8216;auto&#8217; meaning &#8216;self&#8217;, and was used by both Leo Kanner and Hans Asperger to describe the presentation of subjects in their respective early\u00a0studies\u00a0in the area.<\/p>\n<p>East Renfrewshire&#8217;s Autism Diagnostic Team use the World Health Organization (WHO)\u00a0definition in their decision making process:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cASD refers to a range of conditions characterised by some degree of impaired social behaviour, communication and language, and a narrow range of interests and activities that are both unique to the individual and carried out repetitively.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right\">(International Classification of Diseases (ICD) 10, WHO)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">An eleventh version of ICD\u00a0is scheduled for publication and may well follow the most recently revised definition from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM V) which is used in the United States of America.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">By the DSM V definition, Autism Spectrum Disorder is\u00a0diagnosed where there are:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><em>\u201cpersistent difficulties with social communication and social interaction\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><em>\u009e\u201crestricted and repetitive patterns of behaviours, activities or interests\u201d (this includes sensory behaviour)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>present since early childhood, to the extent that these <b>\u201climit and impair everyday functioning\u201d<\/b><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Using DSM V, an individual may be given a diagnosis of Social Communication Disorder rather than ASD\u00a0where there is:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u009e&#8221;presence of persistent social communication and social interaction difficulties&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;\u009eabsence of restricted, repetitive patterns of behaviour&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>DSM V removed various diagnostic\u00a0terms that were used previously,\u00a0including: Childhood Autism, Autistic Disorder, Childhood Disintegrative Disorder, Asperger&#8217;s Syndrome and Pervasive Developmental Disorder &#8211; Not\u00a0Otherwise Specified.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right\">Source: National Autistic Society<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Autism Spectrum Disorder is a diagnostic term that is used by clinicians to describe the\u00a0profile of\u00a0individuals who have additional support needs in the areas of social communication, social interaction and flexibility of thinking.\u00a0 Historically, these needs\u00a0were often referred to in\u00a0literature as\u00a0a &#8216;triad of impairments&#8217; (Wing &amp; Gould, 1979).
