{"id":534,"date":"2019-09-25T11:09:07","date_gmt":"2019-09-25T11:09:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/er\/autismadvisors\/?page_id=534"},"modified":"2019-09-25T11:09:07","modified_gmt":"2019-09-25T11:09:07","slug":"literal-vs-perspective-taking","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/er\/autismadvisors\/working-with-children-and-young-people\/supporting-communication\/literal-vs-perspective-taking\/","title":{"rendered":"Literal vs. Perspective Taking"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"_hGqcJlVsPOHozu\" dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"ms-rterangecursor-start\"><\/span>Neurotypical (NT) people, when interacting naturally look for the intent and perspective of the other person, to give meaning to their words.<\/p>\n<p id=\"_pYJ43dEjho8w24\" dir=\"ltr\">We<strong> read between<\/strong> the words to understand the thoughts, feelings, and perspective of others.<\/p>\n<p id=\"_TPi6Y5LfPaUXBb\" dir=\"ltr\">We are looking at \u201cintent\u201d; <strong>why<\/strong> are they saying what they are saying.<\/p>\n<p id=\"_kRP3B2F15JOHiv\" dir=\"ltr\">People on the spectrum tend to speak very<strong> literally<\/strong> (\u201cWhat I say is what I mean\u201d) with little \u201cinferring\u201d, or reading between the words needed.<\/p>\n<p id=\"_nlINQGAkqZSzql\" dir=\"ltr\">If intent is not clear or obvious, NT people will project (or infer) intent to them.<\/p>\n<p id=\"_qNWgi7tzllGMAi\" dir=\"ltr\">The person with ASD is not reading the <strong>hidden meaning <\/strong>of NT people and NT people are misreading too much hidden meaning behind the literal words of those on the spectrum.<\/p>\n<p id=\"_5Z2JwwLMfidcAL\" dir=\"ltr\">They often read the language of others very literally, missing the hidden meaning. Clarify\u201d literally what you mean, and then \u201cverify\u201d that they understand.
