Being able to communicate is one of the most important skills we need in life.
Almost everything we do involves communication. We use communication to gain attention, request food and drink, share information, make friends, have fun, share feelings, comment etc. These all rely on our ability to communicate with each other.
Makaton is a very simple language based on a list of simple everyday words, which uses speech, gesture, facial expression, body language, signs, symbols and words to aid communication.
Some of our pupils are unable to communicate meaningfully or effectively, and are introduced to other methods to augment this. Makaton can help support a pupils communication and understanding and may help remove any frustrations and therefore enabling the child to connect with others.
At Isobel Mair School we have 2 Makaton Champions who will work collaboratively with our Speech and Language therapists to support pupil, parents and staff with Makaton. We also have a Makaton champion in the Family centre.
We will share our signs of the week and a short video to demonstrate how to form the signs.
