Business management students proved to be a hit on the stock market by finishing top of the leader board in two investment challenges. Competing against 27 other schools, the team was first tasked with investing over £500,000 in a virtual stock market with the aim of maximising its portfolio by the end of a week of trading. The Williamwood team took first place and the top performing traders were invited to BNP Parabis’ headquarters in Glasgow to compete in what was a close battle, with pupils from Boclair Academy. The team was presented with the Investment Challenge trophy and £500 for the school. Congratulations to Jack, Stuart, Lucy, Jonathan, Ayesha and Halina on their excellent success.
Seventeen of the new Higher Biology pupils took part in a microbiology taster session at the University of Glasgow. The pupils dealt with ”blood’ and ”stool” samples taken from patients suffering from a range of bacterial and viral infections including malaria, leishmaniasis, sleeping sickness, e-coli and salmonella. They used complex laboratory techniques to find out the condition each patient was suffering so that the appropriate treatment could be administered. All enjoyed the experience and were commended by the university staff for there excellent behaviour, interesting questions and quality responses to the problems set.
Inspired by the 2012 Olympics, a group of girls from Williamwood High School formed a rowing club and, after a hard winter’s training, competed at the Scottish Schools Rowing Championships for the first time. The championships held at Strathclyde Park over the weekend saw crews competing from all over the country. In the school girls under-15 doubles the crew of Elspeth Omand and Lauren Macnaughton finished second in their final and Elspeth Omand and Kirsty Hunter finished third in the school girls under 14 doubles final. Both crews had a hard day’s racing, coming through some tough heats on their way to the final. The crew were also joined by pupils Laura Speake and Rebecca Vest to compete in the final of the school girl under-15 coxed fours. Also racing over the weekend from the school were Lindsay Vest and Victoria Greenwood . Based at Clydesdale Rowing Club, the girls have received invaluable support from the club especially their coaches Willie Turner and Tom McGuiness.
Williamwood High School PTA is organising a blazer recycling initiative. We are inviting parents to donate good quality blazers, which their children have outgrown and/or no longer need. We plan to offer these blazers to other parents at a reduced price. All profits made will go to the PTA to support projects that will directly benefit pupils of Williamwood.
How do I donate a blazer? <further details>
I have arranged for Man’s World to come to the school from 3.00pm until 8.00pm on Wednesday 19 June.
At this event, you will be able to purchase a full range of uniform items. From experience, I know that many parents find this a convenient way to buy uniform for their children.

Congratulations to Scott (S2), Williamwood PTA’s Golf Open champion for 2013 . Scott won the 9-hole competition, which was hosted by Cathcart Castle Golf Club on Wednesday 1st May, with an impressive score of 40 (six over par). Ronan Johnston (S3) also achieved a score of 40, but finished as the runner-up due to Scott having a lower score over the final two holes.
The annual tournament has been organised and subsidised by the PTA since 2009. We would like to thank all staff at Cathcart Castle Golf Club for making our pupils feel so welcome and for giving them such a great golfing experience.
School children have little experience of the working world, yet within a few years of starting secondary education, we ask them to make choices about the subjects they will take – decisions that will affect their future career and studies.
Together we can support our children in making informed choices… <further information>

This week I shall issue all pupils with an ERC leaflet which provides information on car parking in restricted areas. The leaflet, Be A Smart Parker, explains that from 2 April 2013 community wardens/parking attendants will have civil powers to to issue penalties for static parking offences. The school has a number of parking bays which are clearly marked for the exclusive use of disabled badge holders. Drivers who are not disabled badge holders are strongly advised to avoid parking in these bays. The link below gives more information on this matter.
