S3 INCREDIBLE INNOVATIONS

Huge congratulations to our S3 incredible innovators who have been awarded £500 at the regional finals of the Incredible Innovations competition. The team have worked really hard over the last five months researching and planning their idea. They presented to a panel of industry professionals from Malcom Construction and Morrison Construction at West College Scotland, who were incredibly impressed. We look forward to using this money to take the project forward.

P6 K’Nex Challenge

Our yearly cluster final of the P6 K’Nex challenge took place on Tuesday, with 20 pupils from Busby, Carolside and Netherlee taking part. These pupils had been selected following challenges within their primary schools and their task in Williamwood was to design and build a working crane in an hour. All ten models were innovative and matched the challenge but after much deliberation, Eve and Chloe from Netherlee were chosen as the winners. Their crane is shown below.

Pupil Achievement

Congratulations to Andrew (S4) who travelled to Denmark over the weekend to represent Scotland at judo in the Matsumae Cup.  Andrew won gold in his category.  Andrew was the only Scottish athlete to win gold at this competition over the weekend.  Well done Andrew!

Pupil Achievement

Congratulations to Callan (S3) who won the Chief Scouts Gold Award. This is the highest award that can be achieved in the scout section. The badge is earned by completing a number of challenges and a skills focus including World Challenge Award, Skill Challenge Award, Creative Challenge Award, Outdoor, Adventure, Expedition, Teamwork, Team Leader.  An amazing achievement.  Well done Callan!

PTA Advent Raffle

Glasgow Clyde Open Day

Glasgow Clyde open day is on Thursday 13 December 2018 from 1pm – 7pm to find out about courses starting in January 2019.

The programmes are ideal for January school leavers and can aid progression to courses at a higher level in August or on to full time employment. As the Open Day runs into the evening, pupils could attend the event in the evening with parents.

2018 Senior School Play

On Wednesday 12th and Thursday 13th December 2018 our senior production of Teechers by John Godber will take place in Drama Studios 1 & 2.  Teechers is a hilarious comedy about a group of rebellious pupils who put on a play taking on the roles of their teachers.  Tickets are on sale in the street at lunchtime and are priced £6 full price or £4 concession.

Pupil Achievement

Congratulations to S5 pupil Liana who won the Concerto competition at the Junior Conservatoire on Sunday 18th November.  Liana will be performing Beethoven’s First Piano Concerto with the Junior Conservatoire orchestra at some point next year.

Arkwright Scholarship

Williamwood High School is now an affiliated school for this prestigious scholarship system;

Arkwright’s focus is to identify and nurture future leaders in Engineering and related areas of Design whether they are just starting to warm to the subjects of Engineering and Design or have been keen on Engineering or Design from a young age. Candidates should be actively considering university study and a future career in Engineering (including computing and software) or a related area of Design (systems design, industrial design, process design, technical product design etc.). Ultimately, Arkwright is most interested in students’ future potential to become leaders in Engineering or technical Design.

Art and Design Ambassador

The art and Design department delighted that Eilidh (S6) has been selected to be the Art and Design Ambassador representing Williamwood High School. She attends meetings with other ambassadors from schools throughout East Renfrewshire to discuss ideas of how to promote the Expressive Arts in the area. The ambassadors will be attending a series of workshops with artists to extend their professional practice in association with Developing the Young Workforce. The ambassadors will be helping to raise awareness about the huge variety of clubs and activities available in the area as well as supporting the Art and Design Department within the school to raise the profile of creativity and careers in the arts.

Pupil Achievement

Congratulations to former pupil Zach Mercer who has gained his first cap for the England national rugby union team.   Zach, a current player for Bath in the Aviva Premiership, was brought on as a sub for Tom Curry early in the second half in England’s 12-11 test victory over South Africa. This is a magnificent achievement for Zach and we extend all of our congratulations to him. Well done Zach!
