On Thursday 27 April, Williamwood held its annual Graduation Ceremony for the S6 class of 2017. The evening began with Reece Lyons piping in the graduates. There was then an introduction from Mr Inglis (headteacher) and a motivational speech by Derek Hawkins. Derek Hawkins is a British distance runner from Elderslie, Johnstone. Derek was encouraged to take up distance running by his father and continues to train both Derek and his brother. Derek found success from a young age, winning 16 titles from Under-13 to Senior and representing Great Britain at both the European and World Cross Country Championships. In 2014, Derek competed in the Commonwealth Games and also participated in the 2016 Olympics. In 2016, Derek launches Hawkins Running, an online coaching service. . Musical interludes were provided throughout the evening by Gregor McInnes and Alec Ross; Steven Clark as well as Dan MacKinnon and Callum Robson. The evening concluded with valedictory speeches from Head Boy and Head Girl, Daniel Petrie and Chloe Munro, the S6 depute headteacher, Mr Fisher and a vote of thanks from Anna Campbell. The Williamwood compilation of the popular band Queen starring the S6 class of 2017 and various staff members finished the evening in a entertaining and emotional way. Congratulations to all of the S6 pupils graduating. The evening was well attended by over 900 people. Special thanks to Derek Hawkins for his attendance and inspirational words and the PTA who generously funded the hospitality at the end of the evening. The Queen compilation video can be viewed here.
