S2 Football Training Trip to Feyenoord, Rotterdam

At the end of May, Mr Worton, Mr Allan and Mr Honeyman accompanied 25 S2 pupils on a football training trip to Feyenoord, Rotterdam.

The pupils took part in a number of high quality training sessions at the club’s training ground, led by ex-Netherlands international Ben Wijnstekers. Other coaches included ex-Olympian Michael Obiku and current Sparta Rotterdam player Melvin Zaalman. For the last four years, Feyenoord have won the Rinus Michels Award for the best youth academy in the Netherlands; no small achievement given the presence of Ajax Amsterdam and their world famous youth system.

As well as taking part in a tour of the De Kuip Stadium, the pupils also participated in games against two local sides; SV Honselersdijk and VV Naaldwijk. Both matches were extremely competitive and the welcome received was outstanding.

All of the boys were a credit to their school and were commended for their effort and ability by the staff of Feyenoord. The new S2 should look out in August for information about next year’s trip. More photographs can be viewed here.

Malawi Group Raise £15,000 for ‘Classrooms for Malawi’

Yesterday the S5 Malawi group presented a cheque to Tony Begley who is the director of the charity, Classrooms for Malawi. Classrooms for Malawi have been an invaluable partner in helping the Malawi group to identify projects in Ekwendeni that our group can participate in when they visit Malawi at the end of June. They have also assisted in the organisation of the building work and facilitated the organisation of the events which will take place in Malawi. The £15,000 will be used to fund the renovation of three classrooms at Ekwendeni Primary School as well as building a nursery in Encongolweni. The Malawi group would also like to thank everyone who has supported their fundraising activities throughout the year.

An S2 pupil, Gurvijay, has raised an amazing £345 by getting his hair shaved off in the Street in Williamwood and collecting money from his fellow students and teachers. He was helped on the day by a lovely hairdresser from the Dry Bar and supported by his mum and dad who were very proud of his efforts. Gurvijay also ran a 5km race to support this cause and would like to thank everyone in school who supported him in raising money for the charity, which is one that is very close to his heart.  More photographs can be viewed here.
