History

Why study History?

This Course contributes to students’ understanding of the society in which they live and work by helping them to develop a map of the past and an appreciation and understanding of the forces which have shaped the world today. The course offers a challenging and enjoyable journey for students. The course also develops a range of skills including critical thinking, the ability to explain historical developments and events, evaluating sources and drawing conclusions. There are many careers where the skills and knowledge of the historian will prove useful: law, journalism, the civil service, teaching, publishing, libraries and information, art and design.

S3/4 (National 4/5) course:

  • Free at Last? Race Releations in the USA, 1918-1968
  • The Creation of the Medieval Kingdoms, 1066-1406
  • Migration and Empire, 1830-1939

S5/6 (Higher) course:

  • The Wars of Independence, 1286–1328
  • The Making of Modern Britain, 1880-1951
  • Russia 1881-1821

Assignment:

To pass the course pupils will have to write an assignment. The purpose of the assignment at National 4, 5 and Higher is to demonstrate challenge and application by demonstrating the following higher order cognitive skills, knowledge and understanding within the context of an historical issue. Students will write a report on their own research into a historical theme or question of their own choice. This will assess their ability to research an issue, refer to historical sources and organise their findings to present a balanced argument which leads to a reasoned conclusion based on the evidence presented.

At National 5 level the assignment will be worth 20 marks and will be written up in 1 hour.

At Higher level the assignment will be worth 30 marks and will be written up in 1 hour 30 minutes.

External Exam:

The National 5 question paper will have 80 marks. Students will complete this in 2 hours and 20 minutes.

The Higher exam consists of one paper. The question paper will have 60 marks. Students will complete this question paper in 2 hours and 20 minutes.
