Why study Geography?

Geography opens up for students the physical environment around them and the ways in which people interact with this environment. In the 21st century, with growing awareness of the impact of human activity upon the environment and scarce resources, the study of Geography fosters positive life-long attitudes of environmental stewardship, sustainability and global citizenship. Students will develop a wide range of important and transferable skills, including using, interpreting, evaluating and analysing a range of geographical information; using a range of maps and other data to process and communicate geographical information Opportunities for practical activities, including fieldwork, will be encouraged, so that students can interact with their environment. Geography is important in many career areas such as Planning, Surveying, Market research, Teaching, tourism, Geophysics, Environmental Sciences.

Assignment:

The purpose of the assignment at National 4, 5 and Higher is to demonstrate challenge and application by demonstrating skills, knowledge and understanding within the context of a geographical topic or issue. Students will choose an appropriate geographical topic or issue and collect information from sources of information, which should include the use of fieldwork and/or maps. Students will process the information gathered, using geographical techniques, analyse key features of the topic or issue and reach a supported conclusion.

At National 5 level the assignment will be worth 20 marks and will be written up in 1 hour.

At Higher level the assignment will be worth 30 marks and will be written up in 1 hour 30 minutes.

External Exam:

The National 5 question paper will have 80 marks. Students will complete this in 2 hours and 20 minutes.

The Higher exam consists of one paper. The question paper will have 60 marks. Students will complete this question paper in 2 hours and 15 minutes.

Progression

Students who gain a National 5 pass would progress to Higher in S5. Students who gain a Higher pass could potentially progress to Advanced Higher in S6.
