PD Philippines Appeal

The S3 PD class raised over £360 to support the 500,000 people affected by Typhoon Haiyan, which devastated the central Philippines on 8 November 2013. The funds will help provide  people with life-saving water, sanitation and hygiene materials, and other vital aid.

S1 investigation

All S1 pupils will have received an investigation booklet. Pupils should complete their introduction. See the S1 page for resources. ICT 9 will be open on a Tuesday lunchtime to support pupils.

Trussell Trust

The S3 Personal Development class would like to pass on the thanks of the Trussell Trust food bank. The school donated over 20 carrier bags full of food which is remarkable considering we were only collecting for a few days.
Pupils from the class delivered the food yesterday (Tuesday) and spent an hour helping the volunteers sort holiday food parcels. While there we learned about the food bank which can feed up to 70 people a day.

Thank you again to all staff and pupils who donated.

Mary’s Meals

S1 pupils also worked hard to fundraise and fill 55 backpacks with basic educational materials to send to children receiving Mary’s Meals. Most of the children who benefit from Mary’s Meals and the Backpack Project have suffered war, poverty, famine, or natural disaster. The backpacks will help children to attend school and receive an education which will hopefully help them to escape poverty in later life.

BBC News School Report

In March pupils will have the chance to make their own news reports for a real audience. Pupils develop their journalistic skills to become School Reporters and take part in an annual News Day, simultaneously creating video, audio and text-based news reports, and publishing them on a school website, to which the BBC aims to link.
If you are interested in participating please contact Mrs Johnston.

Fairtrade

The Fairtrade group is run primarily by the pupils involved. The group meets regularly to discuss        upcoming Fairtrade events including raising awareness at parents evenings and during Fairtrade Fortnight in February. Any pupil can join the Fairtrade Committee, we are always happy to see new members get involved and enthusiastic about Fairtrade. Please contact Miss Vannini for further info.

Woodfarm Food Bank

Did you know that up to 350,000 people rely on Food Banks to feed their families in the UK?
Did you know that the UK Red Cross has started asking for food donations for the first time since World War II?
The Trussell Trust runs over 400 food banks in the UK and has seen a 170% increase in demand over the last 12 months. Of those it feeds 36% are children.
The Trussell Trust operates a centre which supports people in Glasgow.
Please consider donating to the Woodfarm High School food bank. A collection table will be at the front door each morning from Tuesday the 10th of December until Tuesday the 17th for you to donate items. Imagine what an impact we would have on poor families across Glasgow if every pupil was able to donate one item.
The following clip shows the type of items we are looking for and posters around the school have lists of required food items – please check this carefully before donating.
Thank you and please donate
