First Minister’s Reading Challenge

Today, was an exciting day as we have launched our whole school Around the World Reading Challenge.  Every child in the school has a reading passport, where they will collect and record the reading that they are doing.  Primary 4-7 are taking part in the First Minister’s Reading Challenge and will plan their ‘Around the World’ route accordingly.  Primary 1-3 have the opportunity to take picture books and non-fiction books home, from either the class library or the school library, to share with their families.  These books can be recorded in their Reading Passport, alongside any other reading book, to help them get around their route.  There are certificates and prizes for children along the way.  The Around the World Reading Challenge will last all year – how many books will the school read?
Reading Routes and links to the Scottish Book Trust recommended reading list to follow.

Official Opening

It was lovely to see so many people turn out for the official opening of the Uplawmoor Play Park.  Mrs McKay was delighted to be asked along to cut the ribbon.  Everyone had fun trying out the brand new equipment  especially Mia who said the old swings “squeaked”.  Mhairi said the new park was “awesone”.   We are sure it will be well used over the October Break.  We hope everyone has a great holiday and we look forward to seeing you all on Monday 24th October.

House Challenge

Everyone worked hard in their houses this afternoon taking part in the first House Challenge of the session.  The Challenge set was to design and build a Hallowe’en themed Scarecrow.  All houses were given the same resources in their Challenge Box but as you can see, all came up with very different designs.  House Captains led thier houses well and commented on the teamwork and problem solving skills demonstrated by their members.  A great effort by all.  The winners today were Caldwell with 50 points.  pf_1476390225

There are around 27 amazing children and young people from East Renfrewshire who are currently being looked after by foster carers.  Many will eventually return to their families. In some cases this may take a matter of days or weeks, for others it may take longer and children could be living with their foster family for one or two years, or into adulthood.

If you can answer yes to the following …

  • You like children and can provide a safe and nurturing home?
  • You have energy, patience and a good sense of humour?
  • You work well as part of a team?

There are children and young people in the local area who are waiting to be cared for by someone like you.  Click on the image above to find out more.

Tesco Helping Hands Award

Mrs Sanders kindly nominated our school for an award from Tesco Helping Hand.  Mrs McKay received a phone call from Tesco at the end of September telling her that we were being awarded £500 to go towards the cost of playground games.  Mrs McKay along with Mrs Grierson, Erin and Blaine visited Tesco, Barrhead to pick up the big cheque.
