Literacy & English

‘Literacy is fundamental to all areas of learning, as it unlocks access to the wider curriculum. Being literate increases opportunities for the individual in all aspects of life, lays the foundations for lifelong learning and work, and contributes strongly to the development of all four capacities of Curriculum for Excellence. ‘ (Literacy and English: Principles and Practice, 2009)

Becoming literate is a complicated process; here in Thornliebank we use a variety approaches to teaching literacy.  In the early years of primary school, children will be taught phonics, or sounds, and how to blend them to make words. Children will also develop skills in understanding, analysis and evaluation as they progress through school and engage with a varitey of different texts.

Pupils will be able to experience writing for a variety of purposes and audiences. The Big Writing Approach has been developed throughout the school, encouraging pupils to focus on VCOP strategies:

  • vocabulary
  • connectives
  • openers
  • punctuation

In Thronliebank, we aim to ensure that children will develop their literacy skills through all areas of learning and so ensure they are applying the skills they have learned in a variety of contexts.  Please click on the link below to view the Curriculum for Excellence fact file. Literacy Across Learning
