{"id":27340,"date":"2021-03-24T07:00:57","date_gmt":"2021-03-24T06:00:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/er\/StNinians\/?p=27340"},"modified":"2021-03-23T22:29:56","modified_gmt":"2021-03-23T21:29:56","slug":"wednesday-reflection-35","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/er\/StNinians\/wednesday-reflection-35\/","title":{"rendered":"WEDNESDAY REFLECTION"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Mid-week Reflection<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">24<sup>th<\/sup> March 2021<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Nebuchadnezzar, or Nabucodonosor!\u00a0 A great name that\u2026but, sadly, not a great person.\u00a0 Verdi called him Nabucco.\u00a0 It was the opera that put Verdi on the map.\u00a0 The opera follows the plight of the\u00a0Jews\u00a0as they are assaulted, conquered and subsequently\u00a0exiled\u00a0from their homeland by the\u00a0Babylonian\u00a0king Nebuchadnezzar II. A good number of years ago, along with Fr. Duggan and Fr. Murray (both former Chaplains of St Ninian\u2019s High School) I went with great excitement to the Arena in Verona and we were looking forward to the best-known number from the opera, the Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves, &#8220;Va, pensiero, sull&#8217;ali dorate&#8221; \/ &#8220;Fly, thought, on golden wings.&#8221; It\u2019s such a treat to hear and usually is given an encore.\u00a0 Not this time, however.\u00a0 At least, not for us.\u00a0 I was suffering from dehydration and had to be carted off to the hospital; depriving us all of the magnificent chorus with exiles singing about their homeland.\u00a0 Anyway, Nebuchadnezzar was guilty of idolatry and thus broke the First Commandment.\u00a0 It is always wrong and foolish to worship a false God.
