{"id":25703,"date":"2020-04-29T07:00:34","date_gmt":"2020-04-29T06:00:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/er\/StNinians\/?p=25703"},"modified":"2020-04-19T13:28:23","modified_gmt":"2020-04-19T12:28:23","slug":"wednesday-reflection-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/er\/StNinians\/wednesday-reflection-3\/","title":{"rendered":"Wednesday Reflection"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Wednesday of the 3<sup>rd<\/sup> Week in Easter-tide.<\/p>\n<p>We cannot move forwards unless we know the past.\u00a0 If you will, cast your mind back to the Crucifixion and to the occupants of the crosses on either side of the Cross of Christ.\u00a0 How tragic is this? One of them, an unnamed thief and murderer, in the Very Presence of Salvation, refuses to believe.\u00a0 Indeed, he mocks and taunts Jesus to prove He is the Christ by taking him down from his cross.\u00a0 Why does he want to be taken down from the cross?\u00a0 Why, to continue his evil ways. When these dystopian days have come to an end and we are taken down from the cross of the coronavirus, we should not return to anything but a better way of life and a renewed and enriched vocation.\u00a0 I wonder if pupils, without adverting to the fact, look to their teachers as sympathisers and inspirers.\u00a0 Unwittingly, perhaps, they look to us to be counter-cultural.\u00a0 They need us to bring Christ into their de-spiritualised society. \u201cI came into this world, that those who do not see, may see.\u201d (Jn, 9.39) Rather cleverly and poetically expressed in Latin as \u201cQui non vident, videant.\u201d The Good Thief whom we know as Dismas, was one who saw and believed.\u00a0 He recognised the ugliness and sinfulness of his previous life and left it behind him.\u00a0 Fr. Charles Plater, a priest of the Society of Jesus, a Classicist, one-time Master at Campion Hall, Oxford after whom the Catholic Workers\u2019 College in Oxford, was named Plater College,\u00a0acquired Jim, a very ugly and un-prepossesing bulldog puppy.\u00a0 He amusingly imagined his pet saying,<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m Jim the bulldog. Candid friends remark<\/p>\n<p>They wouldn\u2019t care to meet me in the dark.<\/p>\n<p>My face perhaps is ugly. I don\u2019t mind it,<\/p>\n<p>I have the happiness to be behind it!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dear teachers, when school resumes once again, we have the opportunity to <em>lure<\/em> our beloved pupils to Christ.\u00a0 To leave behind, not just a virus, but anything that would detract from the great vocation entrusted to us by the Risen Lord.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Let us Pray:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dear Lord Jesus, give us the grace to rejoice with all the saints when You come again in glory, who live and reign for ever and ever.<\/p>\n<p><strong> Amen<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Monsignor Monaghan<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Wednesday of the 3rd Week in Easter-tide.
