The girls won, competing against 3 other schools (St Bride\u2019s and St Andrew\u2019s, Dalziel High and Calderglen).\u00a0\u00a0 Kate Rankin, Katie Magennis and Hannah Dougall built a small buggy from a kit, which could automatically follow a track using light sensors. They had to learn how to solder to do the build. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Calibri\">The girls wowed the judges as their buggy perfectly negotiated the track in the fastest time and they commented that the way that the girls had built the buggy was superb.\u00a0 Kate, Katie and Hannah had completed an additional challenge by using the microbit\u2019s Bluetooth property to control the buggy from an app on a mobile phone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Calibri\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Calibri\">They did an excellent presentation, explaining the process of building the buggy, programming it with a BBC\u00a0 microbit and what they had learned in the process.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Calibri\">The girls also had a chance to hear three of the female engineers working at NXP described their jobs and how their careers had developed. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Calibri\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday a team of three S3\u00a0 girls from Computing Science took part in\u00a0the Girls Only STEM competition organised by NXP Laboratories in East Kilbride.
