S3 CHEMISTRY visit to Auchentoshan Distillery<\/u><\/b><\/span> was a great success.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Fermentation and distillation are covered in the National 4\/5 Chemistry courses. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In Higher Chemistry, batch-type industrial processes are studied and the importance of our industry to the Scottish economy.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

During the tour, the students saw how the grain is prepared, then looked into the large fermentation vats as they bubbled and frothed with CO2 <\/span><\/span><\/sub><\/span>from the yeast.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The huge copper stills used to distilled the whisky were another highlight.as we looked and smelled the different distillation products. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

But most were quite taken by the vast sheds containing the oak barrels used to mature the whisky \u2013 each shed worth millions<\/u><\/span> of pounds!<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Finally drinks \u2013 orange juice! \u2013 in the bar.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

On the way home we had a quiz about the visit. The winners were Jordan Cooper and Michael McLaughlin. The prize? \u201dYour other national drink!\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
