St Ninians’ Girls Win Girls Only STEM Final!

Yesterday a team of three S3  girls from Computing Science took part in the Girls Only STEM competition organised by NXP Laboratories in East Kilbride. The girls won, competing against 3 other schools (St Bride’s and St Andrew’s, Dalziel High and Calderglen).   Kate Rankin, Katie Magennis and Hannah Dougall built a small buggy from a kit, which could automatically follow a track using light sensors. They had to learn how to solder to do the build.

The girls wowed the judges as their buggy perfectly negotiated the track in the fastest time and they commented that the way that the girls had built the buggy was superb.  Kate, Katie and Hannah had completed an additional challenge by using the microbit’s Bluetooth property to control the buggy from an app on a mobile phone.

They did an excellent presentation, explaining the process of building the buggy, programming it with a BBC  microbit and what they had learned in the process.

The girls also had a chance to hear three of the female engineers working at NXP described their jobs and how their careers had developed.
