Auchentoshan Distillery

S3 CHEMISTRY visit to Auchentoshan Distillery was a great success.

Fermentation and distillation are covered in the National 4/5 Chemistry courses.

In Higher Chemistry, batch-type industrial processes are studied and the importance of our industry to the Scottish economy.

During the tour, the students saw how the grain is prepared, then looked into the large fermentation vats as they bubbled and frothed with CO2 from the yeast.

The huge copper stills used to distilled the whisky were another highlight.as we looked and smelled the different distillation products.

But most were quite taken by the vast sheds containing the oak barrels used to mature the whisky – each shed worth millions of pounds!

Finally drinks – orange juice! – in the bar.

On the way home we had a quiz about the visit. The winners were Jordan Cooper and Michael McLaughlin. The prize? ”Your other national drink!”

WELL DONE S3 CHEMISTS!
