PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME

The Curriculum for Excellence recognises the need to educate the whole person, providing the skills and knowledge to participate fully in society and potentially lead rich, fulfilling lives. The Personal Development Programme seeks to develop students’ potential and through the development of a range of skills and abilities, students are encouraged to become reflective learners enhancing their learning in other subjects giving them the potential to achieve success in new and challenging situations, complementing what they are learning in other subject areas.

Aim

The Personal Development programme aims to help learners become employable, contributing and independent members of society, through the development of basic life skills related to task management, social interaction and self evaluation. The course provides opportunities for learners to demonstrate the ability to manage information, communicate effectively, deliver a product or a service while at the same time, helping them to build self-confidence and self-esteem.

Content

The Personal Development units are designed to be flexible in order to meet a range of learning needs. The units are context-free and therefore provide practical learning experiences.

The syllabus consists of four units:

  1. Self Awareness
  2. Self in Society
  3. Self and Work, and
  4. Practical Abilities

Students must complete all four units to secure an overall award.

Delivery

The personal development programme is delivered in school in partnership with Young Persons’ Services, three periods a week (S3/4) and six periods a week (S5/6).

STAIRWAY TO SUCCESS

The Curriculum for Excellence recognises the need to educate the whole person, providing the skills and knowledge to participate fully in society and potentially lead rich, fulfilling lives. Stairway To Success is a programme which is offered to young people in S1 and S2 with additional support needs as part of an alternative curriculum. Stairway To Success is a personal development programme which seeks to develop students’ potential through the development of a range of skills and abilities.

Aim

Stairway To Success aims to help learners improve life skills such as interpersonal and communication skills. The course provides them with opportunities to participate in enterprising projects and to deliver a product or service while at the same time, helping them to build self-confidence and self-esteem.

Content

Stairway To Success is designed to be flexible in order to meet a range of learning needs. The course is context-free and provides practical learning experiences.

The syllabus consists of three units at Access 3 level:

  • Self in Society
  • Self and Work, and
  • Practical Abilities

Students must complete all three units to secure an overall award.

Projects covered so far have been:

  • An RSPB wildlife project carried out with local rangers
  • Enterprise
  • Forest School
  • Global warming

Delivery

The personal development programme is delivered in school three periods a week (S1/S2).
