Iceland 2016

In May 2016, the Geography Department took 30 S2/S3 to the land of Fire & Ice!!

Iceland is one of the worlds most diverse geographical locations and this truly was a once in a lifetime trip. Over the course of the 5 days the pupils were able to learn about Icelandic culture, immerse themselves in the world famous geographical features and get involved with the history of the country. With the help of Miss Donoghue, Mr Dick, Miss Muir and NST travel guide Antony Eccles, the pupils where able to visit one of the most beautiful and most interesting countries in the world.

Here is a breakdown of what pupils did while away:

  • Þingvellir national park.
  • Gullfoss (meaning “golden falls”).
  • Geothermally active valley of Haukadalur, which contains the geysers Geysir and Strokkur.
  • Afternoon at the Blue Lagoon, the geothermal spa is one of the most visited attractions in Iceland.
  • Trip to the Hellisheiði Power Station, the third largest geothermal power station in the world.
  • Full day to the South Shore seeing of some of Iceland’s famous glaciers and its spectacular Black Lava-tinted sand beaches.
  • Seeing some of Iceland’s famous active volcanoes.
  • Enjoying an afternoon in Reykjavík, Iceland’s capital.
  • Staying in the family-friendly Hafnarfjordur (Viking Hotel)
