Success for CAD CAM pupils in Engineering Awards
Last night (7th June) saw the Grand Awards ceremony for the Scottish Engineering Leaders Awards take place in Strathclyde University’s Barony Hall. From over 15,000 entries from across Scotland there were 5 pupils who’s work was graded in the top 0.5% and is being displayed at the Barony Hall over the 8th and 9th of June. From the Creative CAD CAM Engineering class of 2018, the 5 pupils who were recognised for their projects, worked to a brief that was very straight forward; “If you were an engineer, what would you do?” The resulting projects showed a range of creative approaches and demonstrated some amazing problem solving. Ibi Latif and Scott Liddell were both shortlisted for the winners trophies. Eilidh Connolly was given Judges Highly Commended and Jonny Blair and Claire Denholm were among 5 winners in the Secondary School Pupils category.
Among those who attended the awards ceremony was Jonny Blair who went to receive what he thought was his winners trophy but was delighted to find out that he also won the Best Overall prize which is a phenomenal achievement and a testament to the hard work that he put into the project.
Jonny designed and made a prototype of a set of Auto-Pause headphones that will stop the music on your phone when you take off the headphones. He used a range of Computer Aided Manufacturing techniques including 3D printing and embedded light dependent resistors (LDRs) as sensors to make it work.
The pupils work will be displayed in the Design and Technology corridor and should stand as an inspiration to other pupils.
