Business Education

St Ninian's High School

S1 BUSINESS

Our Business Management courses develop learners’ enterprise skills and attributes by providing them with opportunities to study a range of business and organisational contexts.

Learners develop an awareness of the ways in which society relies on businesses and other organisations to satisfy its needs, and an understanding of how to use business information to interpret and report on overall business performance – in a range of contexts. Learners also gain knowledge and understanding of the impact that external influences have on organisations, such as economic impact and sustainability.

S1 pupils attend the department on a rotational basis in order to experience the various subjects delivered under the title of Business Education.

Through this approach pupils will gain the necessary insight into Business Management, Administration and IT, and Accounting, in order to guide their subject selection for progression through the school.

Should any pupil or parent be unsure about their choice of subjects they are welcome to speak with their respective guidance teacher or, for a more subject specific view, to any member of staff within the Business Education department.

The Chocolate Challenge (Business Management)

A programme of work designed to immerse learners in the world of product design and all business tasks associated. Learners will have to come up with an enterprising concept for a new chocolate bar to be sold within a theme park. This involved decided the unique selling point (USP) of the product, designing appropriate packaging and creating a prototype. Learners must establish a marketing  and sales plan as well as consider aspects of cost and pricing to ensure a successful business model could be achieved.

Pet Comforts (Administration and IT)

Learners will complete a project of work which gives them the opportunity to trial all practical elements of the Administration and IT. Tasks ensure pupils have the opportunity to develop skills using all software solutions within the Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, Access, Outlook, Publisher and PowerPoint), whilst also encouraging various skills for work.

Accounting

Learners will be guided through the process of preparing cash budgets in both a personal and business context. Planning income and expenditure and analysing ways in which forecasts can be adjusted to meet specific targets. This element of the course will help develop numeracy and problem solving skills, whilst exploring a range of business issues and developing business acumen.

Organisation, self-management and presentation skills are all essential for not only life in St Ninian’s High School, but also beyond, as learners progress into further education and employment. These skills and abilities are specifically targeted within both aspects of the S1 course to allow future development within the Business Education department, as well as across the curriculum in all subjects.
