2011 int 2 Q8b (i)
Hi Lois
To calculate the answer you need to first recognise that 170 calories is 8.5% of the total.
The total number of calories must therefore be 170/8.5% (i.e. 170/0.085)
This will give you a total of 2000 calories
Hope this helps, let me know if not!
Mr. Gallagher
Specimen Paper Q13a part i and ii
Hi Connor
For 13a) i) The reason that it is expressed as a percentag is because the starting population is different therefore a percentage has to be used for a fair comparison to be made
ii) Total number of birds in 2009 = 300 million (from the passage)
Total number of Meadow Pipit = 12.9 million (from the table)
Therefore 12.9/300 x 100 = 4.3%
Hope this helps
Mr. Gallagher
When describing the effect of solutions on plant and animal cells, when do we use the terms turgid, flacid and shrunken?
Turgid = When the plant cell has gained water (from being in a hypotonic solution)
Flaccid = When the plant cell has lost water (from being in a hypertonic solution)
Shrunken = When an animal cell (e.g. red blood cell) has lost water
