P6a have been using their steam skills

P6a have been designing and creating windmills from next to a strict criteria. They had to plan out their design and then adapt this as they encountered problems  in creating their windmill.

Each windmill had to be:

3D

At least 30cm tall

have 3-6 blades

blades had to turn

independently support itself.

Children built upon skills and knowledge they had previously learned when looking at bridges and creating thir Ferris wheels.

Mathematic Investigations

P6a researched various aspects of Maths from the history to the influence of the Greeks & Egyptians to Chinas influence today.

They researched famous Mathematicians and discovered close relationships with the sciences and art and understood what STEM or indeed STEAM subjects are linked together.

They created posters of their findings and confidently presented these to the class.

Victorian cooking

Inspired by a Victorian cookbook and using ingredients that would have been available during the time period, P6a & P6b joined forces to bake a lovely apple cake.

We were lucky enough to be joined by  some P1 helpers.

After all the preparation, the children learned the importance of tidying up and cleaning their equipment!

Finally, it was a chance to taste their creations. The resounding verdict was every group had correctly followed the recipe, weighed and measured their ingredients and baked a tasty cake!

Ciao!!

This week P6a began their Italian lessons. They learned how to say hello and  goodbye in a variety of forms, what is your name and my name is.

We are very lucky that one of our pupils lived in Italy for a year and she can help with pronunciation.

Following some examples the children hosted a walkabout talk about where they greeted everyone they met.

W/E 6th Sept 2019

Another week has come to an end in P6a. This week we were working on our mental maths skills participating in a “Number of the day” activity.

We received a lovely visit from Fr Joe and Priest in training; Joe, who shared his story of training to be a priest and living in Rome with the children.

We used Peer massage as part of our meditation and calming strategies.

The children stretched their brains and worked on creative strategies trying to solve active problem solving tasks.

The children were introduced to using Ipads and QR codes and will hopefully being expanding their knowledge of the functions of the Ipads over the coming term and learning what they can do with them to aid their learning.

P6a shared their knowledge with P2 when they buddied up for some paired reading. A wonderful experience was had by all.

W/c 26.8.19

This week in P6a we were researching and learning about the Space race and the lunar landing in 1969. This was used as inspiration for our writing, ICT and art lessons.

Unfortunately the weather on Friday wasn’t the best so we didn’t make it to the MUGA for PE but we improvised and worked on our fitness in the classroom with some energetic moves!
