End of Term 3

What an exciting term it has been for Primary 6b! We have planted pumpkins at the waterworks, which we will return to later in 2016 to dig up and cook! We visited the Foundry where we had a fantastic afternoon with all the gymnastic coaches from Flair. For most of the children this was their first opportunity to try the beams and bars. During health week we enjoyed specialist coaches teaching us about bowling, basketball and golf. We also had a fantastic and successful sports day, culminating in some not so healthy ice-cream!

We are rehearsing the school show with P7 and the drama group, and many of the children from P6 have speaking or solo singing parts. Everyone has put in a fantastic effort and we are looking forward to the live performances.

During this term we studied the Olympic games and learned a lot of historical facts. We created art based on movement and  the Olympics and used the theme to inspire us to write poetry, letters and fact sheets. We studied the culture of the host country Rio  and used ICT to research and create presentations for the class based upon Rio, the Olympics or an individual sport.  In maths we recorded decimal notions of time and created graphs and diagrams on Olympic facts and times.

Having worked hard on our reading and literacy skills this year, Primary 6 shared their knowledge and skills with Primary 4 and Primary 2 pupils during paired reading sessions.

It has been a very busy term and the children are ready for the summer break, after which they shall return as Primary 7 for their final year here at St. Marks.

It has been a pleasure to teach the year group for the last two years and I wish them luck and success in Primary 7.

Inventions fair

Thank you to all those who attended the Primary 6 inventions fair. We displayed our hard work and creativity to the school and St Marks community where we enjoyed explain and showcasing our incredible inventions! Although a great effort was made by all, the pupils voted Ethan, Sophie and Eireann as incredible inventors of the year!

October

In primary 6 we went to church for the Pope Francis faith award. We got  Pope Francis faith award bands to wear on our wrists so that people know we are taking part in the award scheme.

We also made pumpkin soup from scratch  and it was so nice!

Welcome back!

We have an exciting year planned for 2015-16 and the blog will be updated more often, with the pupils taking a central role in blogging.

This term marks a new chapter in the pupils lives as they become mentors and buddies to the new Primary 1 pupils. This will allow them to be a central part of their lives for the next two years. Many of our pupils are accepting the responsibility of becoming playzone buddies,  again allowing the younger pupils to model their behaviour and interactions with each other by P6 showing  positive, friendly and co-operative behaviour. There will be plenty of other opportunities this year for Primary 6 to shine within the school, as an individual, class and yeargroup.

Welcome to the new term and the beginning of Primary 6!

Term 2

This term Primary 5 will be studying the British Isles as their topic. This will be explored through various aspects of  the curriculum in an interdisciplinary way. We are working on ball skills in PE and have been building up our over arm, under arm and bounce throws. We will also be studying yoga, to help aid our mental and emotional wellbeing as well as gently stretching and toning our muscles. We will shortly be beginning a novel study in class and using literacy circles to work co-operatively to build on the skills of teamwork that we learned in term 1. This  will help to reinforce our understanding of text by developing our summarising and clarification skills amongst others.
