Our Lady of the Missions Primary School is bidding to bag a massive cash boost from the Tesco Bags of Help initiative.<\/p>\n
Tesco teamed up with Groundwork to launch its community funding scheme, which sees grants of 1st<\/sup> Place \u00a34,000, 2nd<\/sup> Place \u00a32,000 and 3rd<\/sup> Place \u00a31,000 \u2013 all raised from the 5p bag levy \u2013 being awarded to local community projects. greenspace scotland is working with Groundwork to provide support to communities in Scotland.<\/p>\n Three groups in every Tesco region have been shortlisted to receive the cash award and shoppers are being invited to head along to Tesco stores to vote for who they think should take away the top grant.<\/p>\n Our Lady of the Missions is one of the groups on the shortlist.<\/p>\n Our project is to create a sensory garden to allow pupils the opportunity to experience a range of outdoor learning opportunities. The garden will include areas for planting flowers to stimulate the senses. Raised planters will allow the pupils to plant herbs and vegetables to be used during cookery lessons. Mini beast habitats and weather stations will allow pupils opportunities to explore and investigate nature as part of the curriculum. The garden will benefit pupils with sensory processing disorders, creating a calming place and a gentle way to stimulate the senses. This environment will become a place where children with sensory processing disorders feel safe and comfortable in exploring their senses without feeling overwhelmed by them. The garden will contain specially designed areas to develop the pupils imagination inspiring them to create pieces of writing, poetry and art work. The garden will be used to help pupils work towards achieving the John Muir Award and pupils will be responsible for maintaining and conserving the area, creating a space to develop and appreciate nature. This will enable pupils to work alongside parents and volunteers in partnership projects to continue to enhance the features of the garden.<\/strong><\/p>\n Voting is open in stores throughout May and June. Customers will cast their vote using a token given to them at the check-out in store each time they shop.<\/p>\n Tesco\u2019s Bags of Help project has already delivered over \u00a328.5 million to more than 4,000 projects up and down the UK. Tesco customers get the chance to vote for three different groups every time they shop. Every other month, when votes are collected, three groups in each of Tesco\u2019s regions will be awarded funding.<\/p>\n Tony McElroy, Tesco\u2019s Head of Communications in Scotland, said:<\/p>\n \u201cWe are absolutely delighted to open the voting for May and June. There are some fantastic projects on the shortlists and we can\u2019t wait to see them come to life in hundreds of communities.\u201d<\/p>\n Emma Halliday, Community Enabler Coordinator at greenspace scotland, said:<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019ve been thrilled to see the diversity of projects that have applied for funding, ranging from outdoor classrooms, sports facilities, community gardens, play areas and everything in between.<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019re looking forward to learning the results of the customer vote and then supporting each group to bring their project to life.\u201d<\/p>\n Funding is available to community groups and charities looking to fund local projects that bring benefits to communities.
