{"id":7058,"date":"2016-05-03T13:25:08","date_gmt":"2016-05-03T12:25:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/er\/OurLadyMissions\/?p=7058"},"modified":"2016-05-03T13:25:08","modified_gmt":"2016-05-03T12:25:08","slug":"rice-challenge-selling-rice-monday-16th-may-friday-20th-may","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/er\/OurLadyMissions\/2016\/05\/03\/rice-challenge-selling-rice-monday-16th-may-friday-20th-may\/","title":{"rendered":"Rice Challenge: Selling rice Monday 16th May \u2013 Friday 20th May"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The children at Our Lady of the Missions Primary School will be lending a \u2018Helping Hand\u2019 to secondary school children in Malawi over the next few weeks, as they participate in the JTS (Just Trading Scotland) \u201990kg Rice Challenge\u2019.\u00a0 Malawi is one of the poorest countries in Africa and as a result, secondary education, unlike primary, is not free. \u00a0JTS works directly with smallholder farmers in Karonga Malawi to develop sustainable markets for long grain \u2018Kilombero\u2019 rice and it is the sale of just 90kg of this rice that covers the fees for one child to attend secondary school for a year.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>In order to help the rice farmers in Malawi Our Lady of the Missions will hold a House Competition to see which house is able to sell the most Kilombero rice.\u00a0 This will allow the pupils to work together in their houses and also help children in poorer parts of the world access education.\u00a0 Throughout the challenge pupils will explore the similarities and differences between the U.K. and Malawi, the equality of Fair Trade and the importance of sustainability.<\/p>\n<p>JTS believe in helping small holder farmers working together to develop cooperatives, improve farming techniques and introduce them to markets where they can obtain a fair and just price for their produce.<\/p>\n<p>By providing farmers with a regular source of income we help empower them to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Be self sufficient<\/li>\n<li>Feed their families<\/li>\n<li>Enable their children to attend school<\/li>\n<li>Contribute to the development of their community, thus providing a sustainable route out of poverty. The white long grain Kilombero rice will be available to purchase at \u00a33 per kilo bag.
