Children have regular experiences to learn outdoors in the rich natural environment which we have on our doorstep. Outdoor learning experiences provide relevance and depth to the curriculum in ways which are difficult to achieve indoors.

Pupils should have welly boots or a change of shoes and appropriate waterproof clothing that can get muddy for outdoor learning activities. Outdoor learning is built into the weekly timetable. Pupils will know in advance which days they are required to have outdoor clothing on.

PE days – Pupils have two hours of Physical Education per week as recommended by the Scottish Government. Younger children (up to and including P5) can wear polo shirts/sweatshirts rather than shirt and tie on gym days to avoid having to change. Bear this in mind when you buy shirts – they will only be needed 3 days a week as there are 2 PE days. Some of the PE periods are held outside therefore joggers and warm sweatshirts/cagoules are necessary.

Skirts – skirts should be a navy, traditional, plain style and around knee length.

School tie – should be worn to a decent length and knotted neatly.

Shirts – it can be helpful to have at least one long sleeved shirt for school photos/representing the school (e.g. in the school choir).

Footwear – black, sensible school shoes (not trainers or trainer style shoes) should be worn.

Smart, dark leather (or similar) boots can be worn in winter. In extreme weather wellies/snow boots may be necessary. In these cases, you may want to give your child a change of shoes for the classroom.

Jewellery / make up –jewellery should be removed during PE lessons. These can cause health and safety issues. Make-up should not be worn to school.

Labelling clothing– It is vital to label all clothing and replace labels when they fall off. Every week, a large amount of expensive, unlabelled clothing ends up in lost property. There are many shops / websites selling labels – one set will usually last for the duration of your child’s time at school. Unclaimed school items go to a local charity shop at the end of each term.

Valuables – It is important that your child does not wear expensive clothing or valuables.
