NNC Friday Bundle 11.12.20

Dear Parents and Carers,

What a wonderful time to be working with children! There is great excitement in the air!

You are in for a few surprises when you go onto Google Classroom this week. We filmed children every day this week, across the four zones, to ensure that all children in attendance were included. Unlike previous years where we rehearsed daily from the last week in November for our Nativity Concert, this year we managed to capture the children as they naturally performed. There are yawns, wiggling, shouts, scratching, dancing, stretching, shirt lifting and no actions from some and that is absolutely to be expected from 3 and 4 year olds! We really hope that the videos bring some much needed joy and smiles to you and your family.

Please remember that Google Classroom is a secure environment and only the children and parents/carers from your child’s zone will have access to it. As such, these films must not be copied onto any social media platform please.

On Tuesday 15th December we will unveil our festive windows in the Acorn Building on Linn Park Avenue as part of the Living Advent trail around the local community. More details can be found by clicking: http://www.netherleelivingadvent.co.uk/

We really hope that your child takes the time to share their ‘Special Book’ at home with you. The children take great pride in their Special Books and as you can imagine the staff put a lot of work into making sure that they reflect your child’s progressive learning story. We ask that you return ‘Special Books’ during next week.

Next week we will celebrate ‘Party Week’ by playing lots of fun games such as ‘Pass the Parcel’, ‘Statues’, ‘Christmas Corners’ and ‘Hokey Cokey’. We will have one of the following party snacks every day: a Party Ring, a Jammie Dodger, a chocolate coin, a few cheesy puffs or Skips all accompanied by diluting juice. We invite children to wear their party clothes on any of their days attending next week.

We would like to remind you that we are open from 8am-6pm on Friday 18th December. Should you wish to collect your child earlier than normal, as you are collecting siblings from school, please just let us know at drop off time.

On behalf of all staff of Netherlee Nursery Class we would like to wish all families who celebrate Christmas a very Merry Christmas and we hope that all families have a lovely holiday period. Enjoy spending time safely with your family over the festive period and we look forward to welcoming everyone back to nursery on Tuesday 5th January 2021.

Have a lovely weekend,

Mrs Donaldson and Mrs Kerr

NPS Friday Bundle 11.12.20

Hello everyone

Firstly, I would like to say a huge thank you to the parents who have got in touch to offer their input by way of photos and videos in line with our celebration of world religions and cultural traditions.  Our classes have enjoyed learning about Christmas and Hanukkah during assemblies and also in some classes this week.  Having real photos and short video clips has really brought these celebrations to life.  Thank you so much, please do continue to get in touch with me throughout the year if you would like to support the learning in Netherlee in this way.

I indicated last week that, as is the case each year, the school will close at 2.30pm next Friday ahead of the holidays.  As our P1 and P2 children already leave a little earlier each day, these stages will therefore finish at 2.15pm on Friday.

Please find attached a note with regards to the P7 teachers who are planning a movie afternoon.

Due to P1 and P2 children watching their online live pantomime next week, they will be having a slightly earlier lunch on the following dates and times.

  • P1 – Wednesday 16th December: 12.10 – 12.55
  • P2 – Thursday 17th December: 12.10 – 12.55

Could I please respectfully remind everyone that whenever possible, only one adult should drop off or collect our children from school and nursery.  This simple act would very much help with the volume of adults required to come to Netherlee and would therefore greatly help with your ability to social distance from each other.  Thank you for your help and support with this very important point and also for continuing to wear face coverings in order to continue to work together to keep our community as safe as possible just now.

I am sure you will agree that our children and staff have all worked very hard since coming back to school in August and I am sure you will be looking forward to a rest as much as we all are.  As such, there will be no homework next week and we would love it if instead, you could post some lovely photos on Twitter of some of the activities and fun preparations that are happening at home ahead of the very special holidays.  Indeed, if you would like to do this, the link is https://twitter.com/sand_nc.  Please do visit us on Twitter as this is a super way of looking through a window into lots of what is happening in our school and nursery as well as enjoying seeing how compassionate our children and staff are.  For example, this week some children have put together letters, a video Christmas message and also prepared well over 100 Christmas Gift Bags for our local care home residents as well as one class also writing letters to refugee children in Glasgow – how lovely.  Many classes are also creating Christmas and Winter artwork to give to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in order to brighten up their Emergency Department in order to spread some festive cheer!  These acts demonstrate very well Netherlee’s status as a Gold Rights Respecting School as well as showing our pupils acting as responsible citizens in their community.

I will be back in touch next week with our Stage Sway Newsletters which, as always, will include lots of lovely photographs for you to enjoy but, until then, have a really lovely weekend everyone.

Hello again everyone

I can now confirm that school and nursery will both close on Friday 18th December as planned.  School will close at 2.30pm that day and nursery hours will remain unchanged.  We will then look forward to welcoming everyone back to Netherlee on Tuesday 5th January 2021.

I am very pleased to share that our Covid related pupil absences remain extremely low in Netherlee.  However, we have very good systems in place for ensuring that any child who is self-isolating can engage in remote learning whilst at home.  We continue to use the Google Platform for this home learning via your child’s Google Classroom.  Recently, the Leadership Team have been asking some children who have gone through this experience how they have found it.  They have shared that they found the procedures in place to be very good and they liked how staff were checking in with them while they were not in school.  Some of the comments from the children include:

“The tasks that we were given were fun and not too hard or easy, they were just right.”

“I liked that my teacher checked in with me.”

“The work was fine, I missed my friends though.”

“It was great that I had the jotters at home.”

“It was easier to concentrate on my work cos it was quieter.”

“There was just the right amount of work.”

“The instructions to do the work were good. It was easy to understand what I had to do.”

As you can see, it is reassuring to hear that the children asked so far have said that the learning was a positive experience with a few stating that the only negative was that they missed being in school and being with their friends in class.  We of course missed them too but it is also reassuring to know that our remote learning procedures are working well when needing to be implemented.  If your own child has experienced remote learning since returning to school in August and you would like to share any of your own thoughts in relation to this then please do get in touch with me.  I am always very interested and grateful to receive any helpful feedback from you.

You will now be able to see, on the Netherlee Website, a stage specific list of useful websites which I hope you and your child will find both helpful and fun to engage with. These are now available under the Curriculum Tab.

Netherlee Living Advent is back this year and we are asking the local community get involved. Our school and nursery will be joining in the festive fun by unveiling windows on 15th December. Please click on the link http://www.netherleelivingadvent.co.uk/ for more details or have a look at the attached map and route.

Join the PTA for their next meeting on Wednesday 9th December @ 7pm – https://uofglasgow.zoom.us/j/93022166470?pwd=R250Wm9reWVjRWw0L2VRdmk1ZHVxQT09 (Meeting ID: 930 2216 6470 and Passcode: 624754).

And finally…..  I am delighted to share that one of my lovely teachers, Miss Alison Montgomery, is going to have a very special day very soon as she celebrates her marriage on 12th December.  We look forward to welcoming Mrs Alison McGuire J back the following Monday.  I am sure you will join me in wishing Alison a very happy and special day.

I hope all families have a lovely weekend.

Mrs Donaldson

Additional Year Group Additions:

P5: Attached to this email is a letter from P5 teachers with regards to the Senior Citizens Christmas Tea.

P1/2: It’s an exciting time in school just now on the run up to Christmas! Your children are continuing to work really hard and are enjoying all the learning that is taking place. I’m delighted with how well they have settled into school life and I can’t believe they’re almost half way through the session!

Our P1 and P2 children would love to share some of their learning with you. With this in mind, our P1 and P2 teachers will be making a short film of the children in their class and the learning that is taking place around the Nativity story. The children have been working really hard to learn their lines and create some beautiful artwork too!

Your child’s class’s short film will be made available to view on your child’s Google Classroom. Please remember that this is a secure environment where children’s work can be shared and only the children and parents/carers from your child’s class will have access to it. As such, these films must not be shared on any social media platform please. We will let you know when these are available and we hope you will thoroughly enjoy watching them!

NNC Friday Bundle 04.12.20

Hello everyone

We’ve had lots of excitement in the nursery this week as the decorations, trees and festive preparations got under way. The children are all working hard on the actions for our performances in the four zones which will be shared on Google Classroom on Friday 11th Dec.

Our Learning Links will be available to read today on Google Classroom. Next Friday you’ll not only get to watch your child’s performance on Google Classroom but you’ll be able to share a virtual visit from a Christmas VIP (he wears a red suit!) with your child.

You can apply for a P1 school catchment place for your child if you currently live within East Renfrewshire Council or will be living within the authority by the start of the new session in August 2021. Online applications should be made from 1 December 2020 until 22 January 2021. Please click on the link for more information and to apply: https://www.eastrenfrewshire.gov.uk/apply-for-p1. Applications to defer your child’s place will be available towards the end of 2020.

When bringing your child’s lunch we would like to remind you that children under five should have grapes and cherry tomatoes quartered before eating. If bringing these at lunch time please ensure that they have been prepared for your child to eat.

We have been asked by our PTA for children to ‘Wear Something Festive’ on Friday 11th Dec. Please the see attached flyer for further information regarding donating to Glasgow South East Food Bank on this day if you can.  Also attached is information on the PTA Winter Wonderland Online Fayre this weekend.

During next week children will be taking their Special Book home to share. Please feel free to add any artwork, photos or items that your child/you would like to share to show their learning journey. We would encourage you to complete the comment sheet in the Special Book. We ask that Special Books are returned during w/b 14th Dec to ensure that staff can quarantine these for 72hours before using again.

This year, to help with Covid safety, we ask that your child doesn’t bring Christmas Cards to nursery for staff to give out to other children.  Thank you for your understanding with this.

Please find attached information about ‘Best Start Grant’ and ‘Scottish Child Payment’- benefits which will provide eligible families with £40 every week for each child under 6.

Please remember to follow the Living Advent trail around the local community. More details can be found by clicking: http://www.netherleelivingadvent.co.uk/

We would like to remind you that nursery will not close early on Friday 18th Dec and that children can attend for their normal sessions between 8am-6pm or 9am-3pm. Should you wish to collect your child at the same time as collecting a child from school, please just let us know at drop off time.

Have a lovely weekend everyone, keep safe and well.
