Support for Learning

SUPPORT FOR LEARNING

The class teacher has the responsibility for identifying children who need additional support for learning.  When a child is identified, this information will be given to our Learning Support Coordinator, Mrs R Crossan  (DHT).  Support will be given primarily by the class teacher, within the classroom situation with additional input from our support teacher or a member of the management team.  Progress is then monitored and reviewed.  Any areas requiring further investigation and possible action are identified.  It is our policy to support all children who have additional support needs.

Whenever a difficulty is identified parents/carers will be contacted inviting them to the school to discuss the details of the difficulty.  Parental cooperation is very important especially in the area of encouragement and appreciation of the child’s efforts.

Mrs J McDermott (PT Inclusion) and Psychological Services are available to give direct support to pupils when required.  They also offer advice to class teachers involved in teaching pupils with learning difficulties.

Mrs R Crossan, DHT and Learning Support Coordinator would be happy to offer advice and information on aspects of your child’s learning needs.

Specific Learning Difficulties (Dyslexia)

Dyslexia is a specific learning difficulty in its own right.  We use the term where a boy or girl is having difficulty with aspects of reading or writing when there is a clear difference between these and the way they perform in other areas of schoolwork.

If you think your son or daughter may be dyslexic your first step is to approach the school.  We would be happy to give you advice and information on Specific Learning Difficulties (Dyslexia).

There will be strategies in place to help deal with any problems that teachers have identified.  However, if not, assessments may be carried out to establish the nature and severity of the problems your son or daughter is facing.  This may involve specialist help and advice from an Educational Psychologist.  As stated previously the school policy is to keep you and your child fully informed of the results of these assessments.

Our school has been accredited as a Dyslexia Friendly School.
