Expressive Arts

EXPRESSIVE ARTS

Learning in, through and about the expressive arts enables our pupils to:

  • Be creative and express themselves in different ways
  • Experience enjoyment and contribute to others’ enjoyment through creative and expressive performance and presentation
  • Develop important skills, both those specific to the expressive arts and those which are transferable
  • Develop an appreciation of aesthetic and cultural values, identities and ideas and, for some, prepare for advanced learning and future careers by building foundations for excellence in the expressive arts

In Neilston we follow the framework of Curriculum for Excellence which begins with experiences and outcomes for presentation and performance across the Expressive Arts, followed by the experiences and outcomes in:

  • Art and Design
  • Dance
  • Drama
  • Music

Our programme of art and design includes drawing, painting, collage, printing, 3D (modeling), fabric and the study of artists.  Through this our pupils develop their skills in art and to express their own feelings.

In dance our pupils will participate in dance activities contributing to their physical activity and be closely linked to their physical education programme.

In drama we involve the children in acting out situations, in simple improvisations and in mime and movement.  Most children come to school with extensive experience of imaginative play and this is extended by dramatic activities.  Many areas of the curriculum lend themselves to dramatic interpretation, both structured and ad-lib.  Activities within our drama programme challenge the children in dynamic and enjoyable ways.

In Music the pupils are given opportunities to gain knowledge, understanding and skills by active participation in musical experience throughout all stages of the school.  Some pupils also receive instrument tuition, both in the school and some provided by the Local Authority Music Service on Saturday mornings.

In all of the above our pupils will develop, enhance and apply skills gained in the expressive arts in a very broad range of activities including role play, participation in whole school events eg our annual school show, community events and outdoor learning.  These activities help to promote the development of skills in areas such as talking and working with others, and contribute greatly to pupils’ mental, emotional, social and physical wellbeing.
