S1 Rapid Response

Yesterday, our S1s became Rapid Response engineers for the day and completed a variety of tasks responding to a hurricane in Hondurus.  They had to work together in groups to build a shelter, transport emergency water, purify water, complete an orienteering task and make survival food.  This links to work they have been doing in classes across the curriculum such as learning Spanish in Modern Languages, learning about water purification in Science, measuring area in Maths and learning about the formation of hurricanes in Geography.

S6 IDL Ambassadors

MCHS is delighted to introduce our S6 IDL Ambassadors who are (from left to right) Shona Bruce, Perle Picard, Anna Gillespie, and Rebecca Gray. They will help coordinating whole school events, organising helpers within their year group and bringing exciting new ideas to Interdisciplinary learning across all year groups.  If you have any suggestions or feedback regarding IDL, please feel free to speak to Shona, Perle, Anna or Rebecca.

Macalaureate Award

Huge congratulations to Yung Wong who has earned the first ever Macalaureate Award at Mearns Castle High School.

Following her work with the S Factor, Yung chose to use her Art and History skills to produce a bonny wee leaflet all about William Wallace.  This was of a very high quality indeed.  Yung will be presented with her certificate and reward in the near future and has also earned Wallace house points.  Weel done Yung!

S3 Interdisciplinary Industrial Awareness Day

S3 pupils took part in a newly developed Interdisciplinary Industrial Awareness day called ‘Headliner’.  The purpose the project was to promote a headliner act at a gig. Each group was given an artist at random including Usher, Lady Gaga, Foo Fighters and Justin Bieber and had to complete a series of activities throughout the event.  Each act was in the top 25 performing artists in the world for their tours in 2011.

Pupils were responsible for writing their own business plan including: marketing strategy; choosing a venue in Glasgow (including cost and capacity details); deciding on a ticket price based on worldwide averages and producing a final profit margin based on expected ticket sales.

S1 – Reminder that Tuesday 29th May is Rapid Response Day!  You will have normal classes periods 1 & 2 – so please remember your jotters etc!  Periods 3-7 you will be involved in the event – working in groups around the school.

You are allowed to wear non uniform on Tuesday, as much of the event is outside.  Please dress appropriately for the weather and activities such as orienteering and water transportation – trainers should be worn.  Your groups will be posted on the S1 notice board.

Rapid Response

All S1 pupils will be involved in the Rapid Response event on Tuesday 29th May. This event will be in the form of a challenge day, in school, from periods 3-7 inclusive.

Two weeks ago pupils attended a motivational presentation made by an engineer from CITB who set the scene.  Tomorrow they have the opportunity to play the role of Rapid Response engineers.
