Chess Competition Winner – Ethan Palmer S1

On 26 April, as Under 12 Winner of the Delancey Schools Chess Challenge, Ethan Palmer travelled to Airdrie to play against all the other Under 12 winners from schools in the West of Scotland.

Ethan achieved the outstanding result of winning the Under 12 Megafinal.  He now qualifies to compete in the Northern Gigafinal, held in Manchester in July.  We wish him all the best.  Well done Ethan!

Chess Club

Well done to Daniel O’Brien S1, Semon Tatarenko S3 and Greig McKay S4, who were runners up in the Delancey UK Schools’ Chess Challenge.

Congratulations to the overall winner, Jack Bell S2, who maintained his 100% record by winning all 7 matches.

These players now qualify for the Area Megafinal.

The following pupils, as leading scorers in their age group, also qualify to go forward to the next round:

  • Ethan Palmer S1
  • Marina Gladkikh S2
  • Max Irving-Robertson S2

Well done to everyone who took part.

Chess Team

Well done to members of the Junior, Intermediate and Senior chess teams, who recently played against St. Ninian’s High School, in the Glasgow Schools Chess League.

We had some very close, competitive  matches, one of which was only decided in the final seconds of play. Overall, the Junior and Senior Teams lost, whilst the Intermediate team drew.

All players were a credit to themselves and to the school.

Special mention should be made of Ethan Palmer S1, Jack Bell S2 and James Howard S4 who demonstrated outstanding skills in their individual matches.

Congratulation to our Chess Club

Congratulations to members of the Junior Chess Team for winning the Glasgow Schools Chess Association Junior League.  This is a terrific achievement since it is the first time that the players have entered the league or indeed played together.  During the season, the players have successfully competed against various secondary schools in the Glasgow area, producing decisive victories as well as nail-biting finishes against the clock.  The Junior League shield and medals will be presented to our players soon.

The Intermediate Chess Team has also been competing in their respective league, the Glasgow Schools Chess Association Intermediate League.  There are a number of matches remaining in this league with the last round of matches scheduled for the end of May.  Our players have produced some excellent match play, recently defeating Smithycroft School, and should be commended on the fact that they are often competing against players who are several years older, with this league open to pupils up to S4.

Well done to all our players:

S1 – Aidan Causer, Fraser Clarke, Guy Cowan, Colin Howie, Rory McFadzean and Fraser Scott

S2 – James Howard, Greig McKay and Lawrence Ng

Both teams show great promise for the future and look set to build on their success next year.

The club meets every Thursday at lunchtime.  New members are always welcome.
