Charity, congratulations, information

Charities Week Money

Following on from the voting for nominated charities at the house assemblies on Monday, the following charities will receive money from the Charities Week fund:

Gleneagles:    £1,000 to McMillan Cancer

Wallace: £500 to SSPCA  and  £500 to Water Aid

Ramsay: £500 to Help for Heroes  and  £500 to Save the Children

Caledonia: £500 to Ayesha Bone Marrow Appeal

and  £500 to Beatson Cancer Unit

Balmoral: £500 to SANE Mental Health

and  £500 to World Wildlife Fund

Sutherland:     £500 to Alzheimers Society

and  £500 to Glasgow City Mission for homeless people

In addition, The Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice will receive £2,400 and Motor Neuron Disease Research  will be sent a cheque for £800 (this as a result of the Ice Bucket Challenge)

A full breakdown of the voting will be made available to S6 House Captains and will be shared with pupils in each house at the next house assembly.

Thanks to everyone in the school community for a wonderful effort for charity this year.  Well Done !

Ice Bucket Challenge

During the recent Ice Bucket Challenge craze, Mr McKenna, S6 Year Head, was challenged by his pupils to take part.  Mr McKenna set a goal to raise £500 for MND Scotland, and within a week, over £550 was kindly donated.  As Mr McKenna completed the challenge, in his suit and tie, in front of his year group, he nominated the Pupil Leadership Team and the Head Teacher, Mr Smith, to join in during charities week.  They all took part and the pupils witnessed the hilarious soaking of Mr Smith.

 On Monday 15/12/14, Ian McWhitter, Head of fundraising at MND Scotland, visited Mearns Castle to thank the pupils for their kind donation and picked up a cheque for £800! This money would fund the care of a patient living with Motor Neurone Disease for almost a year.  A huge thanks goes to the pupils and staff at Mearns Castle who participated in the ice bucket challenge and donated to MND Scotland.  A special mention should go to Hannah Dodds and Martin Lyttle S6 for organising the event.

Boys Football

We have three out of five teams into the last 32 of the Scottish Cup competitions at their respective age groups – Under 13, 14 and 18s.

This is a fantastic achievement for all of the boys who have been involved in the games. The year groups now face the following opposition in the next round and it would be great to have support from pupils and staff if they are able to make the games.

If you are interested in doing so then please see details below. Kick off times are approximate times as games can start a bit earlier/later.

U13 v. Holyrood HS (away) – This game is scheduled to be played on Tuesday 13th January 2015 at Toryglen Football Centre – 4.30pm ko.

U14 v. St Ninians HS (home) – This game is scheduled to be played on Thursday 18th December at MCHS (astro) – 4.15pm ko.

U18 v. Strathaven Ac (away) – This game is scheduled to be played on Thursday 18th December at Hamilton Palace Sports ground – 4.15pm ko.

S1 Boys Handball

The boys who have attended Tuesday lunchtime Handball Club have been doing great – we usually have about 12 boys turning up regularly which is enough to create S1 boys team.

It would be good to get a few more S1 boys to come along so that we can practice full games (7 v 7).

If you are interested then come along on Tuesdays Lunchtimes at 12.30pm in the Old Gym.

Games will be organised in 2015 for those boys who are attending regularly.

An after school club may also be available so keep a look out for the Club newsletter.
