ERC Schools Athletics Championships – 2nd June

A massive congratulations to all of the pupils who represented the school at ERC Athletics Championships on Tuesday 2nd June at Linwood On-X. All 45 athletes did really well and many won medals – a list of medal winners will be shared at the forthcoming house assemblies. If any athlete did not receive a medal but finished in top three in the final then please see Mr Murphy in PE Dept immediately.

Some athletes may be selected to represent East Renfrewshire at the forthcoming Inter-Authority Athletics due to be held on 16th June.

Chess Competition Winner – Ethan Palmer S1

On 26 April, as Under 12 Winner of the Delancey Schools Chess Challenge, Ethan Palmer travelled to Airdrie to play against all the other Under 12 winners from schools in the West of Scotland.

Ethan achieved the outstanding result of winning the Under 12 Megafinal.  He now qualifies to compete in the Northern Gigafinal, held in Manchester in July.  We wish him all the best.  Well done Ethan!

Chess Club

Well done to Daniel O’Brien S1, Semon Tatarenko S3 and Greig McKay S4, who were runners up in the Delancey UK Schools’ Chess Challenge.

Congratulations to the overall winner, Jack Bell S2, who maintained his 100% record by winning all 7 matches.

These players now qualify for the Area Megafinal.

The following pupils, as leading scorers in their age group, also qualify to go forward to the next round:

  • Ethan Palmer S1
  • Marina Gladkikh S2
  • Max Irving-Robertson S2

Well done to everyone who took part.

S1 Basketball

Congratulations to the following S1 girls who won the Renfrewshire Schools Basketball Cup, beating St Andrews Academy in the final 50-16. This was a great end to their season which saw them undefeated and capped off an excellent League and Cup double. Both trophies are away to be engraved and will be in the trophy cabinet at the front of the school soon.

Green-Flag Award

Congratulations to all pupils – Mearns Castle has been awarded a second Green Flag Award!

This award is a reflection of the work carried out in a number of areas in the school related to litter reduction, waste minimisation and generally being eco-friendly.

A particular thanks to the Eco-Committee who worked hard to complete the application form and carry out a variety of jobs every year including an environmental review of the school.

New members are always welcome to join the Eco-Committee who meet Monday lunchtimes in Science lab A8.

Congratulations to our level 1 and level 2 gymnasts who participated in the East Renfrewshire Schools Gymnastics Competition.

The level 1 ‘A’ team won the bronze medal (Isla McMillan, Eilidh Stevens, Lauren Dignan and Robyn Turner).   Our level 2 ‘A’ team won the silver medal and have qualified for the Scottish Schools finals at the end of March.  The level 2 team was Joy Fitzpatrick, Sean Roberts, Heather Cook and Rachel McCallum.

Well done to all pupils who participated in the event.
