Children develop the skills needed to interpret and analyse information, simplify and solve problems, assess risk and make informed decisions

A key feature of the mathematics framework is the development of algebraic thinking from an early stage. Mental agility and the ability to work confidently to manipulate and utilise core numbers is also a vital aspect of learning. We teach our children to focus upon the ‘process’ of calculations just as much as the final ‘product’ or answer. Strategies to help with different types of calculations are taught in a progressive way; mental maths has a significant role to play in developing mental agility and, to this end, some time is spent on this area of maths in each class on a daily basis. ‘Number Talks’ strategies are a central part of this and your children will learn much more about these as they progress through the primary stages.

Children are taught basic numeracy skills including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, as well as developing problem-solving and practical skills and knowledge. Purposeful play in maths helps provide relevance for our children. Children will also develop strategies in order to solve mathematical problems and learn concepts, facts and techniques. The content of the mathematics framework includes Information Handling, Number, Money and Measurement and Shape Position and Movement.

Giffnock Primary Core Numeracy Skills Parental Booklet

Number Talks Parental Guide

Primary 1 Numeracy Workshop 2025

OVERVIEW

Go to this Sway

Primary 2 Read Write Count Parent Workshop

Primary 3 Read Write Count Parent Workshop

Maths Week Scotland 2022

Across the school pupils focused on ‘Patterns’ in Numeracy and Mathematics, as well as other curricular areas, to celebrate and recognise Maths Week Scotland 2022.
