Scotland\u2019s curriculum \u2013 Curriculum for Excellence<\/strong> –<\/span>helps our children and young people gain the knowledge, skills and attributes needed for life in the 21st century.<\/p>\n

Scotland\u2019s curriculum places learners at the heart of education. At its centre are four fundamental capacities. These capacities reflect and recognise the lifelong nature of education and learning. They: <\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 recognise the need for all children and young people to know <\/span>themselves as individuals and to develop their relationships
\nwith others, in families and in communities <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 recognise the knowledge, skills and attributes that children and <\/span>young people need to acquire to thrive in our interconnected, digital and rapidly changing world <\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 enable children and young people to be democratic citizens <\/span>and <\/span>active shapers of that world<\/span><\/p>\n

Curriculum is defined as the totality of all that is planned for children and young people from early learning and childcare, through school and beyond. That totality can be planned for and experienced by learners across four contexts:<\/p>\n

Curriculum Entitlements<\/strong><\/p>\n

Children and young people\u2019s rights and entitlements are central to Scotland\u2019s curriculum and every child and young person is entitled to experience:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 a curriculum which is coherent from 3 to 18<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 a broad general education, including well planned experiences and outcomes <\/span><\/p>\n

across all the curriculum areas from early years through to S3. This includes understanding the world, Scotland\u2019s place in it and the environment, referred <\/span>to as Learning for Sustainability<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 a senior phase after S3, which provides opportunities to attain and achieve, <\/span>including to study for qualifications, awards and other planned activities to <\/span>develop the four capacities<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 opportunities for developing skills for learning, <\/a>skills for life and skills for work<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 opportunities to maximise their individual potential, benefitting from appropriate <\/span>personal support and challenge<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 support to help them move into positive and sustained destinations <\/span>beyond school<\/p>\n
