Numeracy and Mathematics

Mathematics is important in our everyday life, allowing us to make sense of the world around us and to manage our lives.  It equips us with the skills we need to interpret and analyse information, simplify and solve problems, assess risk and make informed decisions.

Our Numeracy and Mathematics programmes and courses cover:

Information Handling
Number, Money and Measure
Shape, Position and Movement

Our Numeracy and Mathematics programme use a range of interactive teaching approaches to support learning.  Teachers use  a variety of resources  including Heinemann, TeeJay and Primary Maths in Action .  ICT is also used to enhance learning experiences.  Our pupils study basic number skills of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, as well as developing problem-solving and practical skills and knowledge.  Oral and mental maths have a significant role to play in developing mental agility and to this end, some time is spent on this area of maths in each class on a daily basis, allowing for interactive learning.

The Mearns Cluster has developed a consistant method of teaching certain skills and agreed on language we will use for introducing strategies and skills.
