The Modern Languages department currently offers two languages, French and Spanish.

All S1 pupils study three modules in French and one in Spanish. At the end of S1, pupils may choose which language they would like to study from S2 until the end of S4.

In S5 and S6, pupils who have been successful in Modern Languages have the option of continuing their studies to Higher and Advanced Higher level.

Through the study of a modern language, pupils will…

• become increasingly confident when speaking, reading, writing and listening to the language
• gain knowledge of how the language works and apply this knowledge in the four skills above
• develop their communication, presentation and ICT skills
• develop awareness of the target language country, including its culture and lifestyle
