The award scheme started in 2004 and is running in over 4000 primary and secondary schools in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.<a (UNCRC) at the heart of a school\u2019s planning, policies, practice and ethos.<\/p>\n<p>A Rights Respecting School not only teaches about children\u2019s rights but also models rights and respect in all its relationships: between teachers\/adults and pupils, between adults and between pupils. Children\u2019s rights are central to all aspects of UNICEF\u2019s work, including education, and we use the UNCRC as a framework for our activities.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Key principles and provisions of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The UNCRC consists of 54 articles. A \u2018child\u2019 is defined as every human being below the age of 18.<\/p>\n<p>The key provisions are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The right to a childhood<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>The right to be educated<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>The right to be healthy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>The right to be treated fairly<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>The right to be heard<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><u>Please click here to view the UNCRC articles.<\/u><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Why teach about the Convention?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Teaching children and young people about the UNCRC means that they can find out about the legal and human rights and responsibilities that underpin society.
