Science Week – Family Learning Challenge

Just a reminder from Mrs Fleming that shared family learning projects should be sent into school on Tuesday 31st March. We need time to get them displayed for parents to see when they attend the Easter Service on Thursday 2nd April. Pupils will also get an opportunity to see the projects from across the school.  Lots of children have been telling me about what they are doing at home and it sounds as if we will have a range of really interesting projects.

Just in case the sheet has not made it home – here is an electronic version.

Science Fun at Carlibar

This week and next week our focus for learning is science.   We have a number of workshops and shows taking place in Carlibar. There is also a shared family learning challenge sheet that has been sent home with a range of science topics for you to choose from.  There will be certificates for everyone taking part and mystery prizes available.

On Tuesday 24th March we have Think Science delivering a workshop on electricity for primary one children and all family centre children will be able to visit the inflatable planetarium to learn more about space.

Thursday 26th March Generation Science are visiting and will deliver the following activites

A fascinating mix of sound, music and the science of noise. In this highly interactive show pupils will investigate the principles of sound; from how a simple noise is made to modern digital music technology. See music come to life in front of your very eyes, and create your own recording with the class!

Friday 27th March Generation Science are visiting and will deliver the following activites

Forces, movement and motion are investigated by our popular teddy bear team in a series of fun and engaging activities for all the class. Our inquisitive bears reveal the principles of gravity, friction and movement demonstrated through challenges that connect science concepts to the real world.

Pupils will discover the secrets of electricity first-hand in this stimulating interactive workshop.
Pupils explore what electricity is, how it can be stored and even create some themselves using our specially designed hand generators.

In this engaging hands-on workshop our storytellers introduce concepts such as magnetic attraction and repulsion, fields and poles. Interactive supported play
allows pupils to explore magnetic forces first hand as they learn about the effects they have on the world around us – like the amazing Northern Lights.

Monday 30th March Think Science will visit again and carry out workshops exploring electricity and building circuits with Primaries 5 and 6.

Tuesday 31st March we will have an assembly for pupils where each class can share their learning.

Science week

We have had another really successful science week at Carlibar.  The children enjoyed a range of interactive workshops and activities throughout the week.

Generation Science, the outreach service from the Edinburgh Science Festival taught Primary 2 children about forces in the Ready, Teddy, Go workshop featuring two bears called Isaac and Newton.

Primaries 3, 4 and the bronze room learned about simple chemical reactions by taking part in Get Fizzy workshops.  Primary 6 investigated chemical reactions and tested the PH of different solutions in the Fizz, Bang, Pop workshops..

Jon Davis from Think Science entertained the children in Primary 5 and Primary 7 with his sound and waves workshops and helped them to learn about how sound is produced. Primary 1 children loved finding out more about different types of weather including how clouds are formed and that lightning is an electrical charge.

Science Week

All of our children have had wonderful experiences during science week.  Our Primary 6 scientists have been working very hard to go around all of the classes and the nursery to demonstrate a range of experiments.  The nursery children and Primaries 1 and 2 enjoyed a visit from Think Science.  The scientist amazed them with lots of demonstrations including making clouds, thunder and lightning. Generation Science are visiting the school tomorrow and will treat all children in Primaries 3-5 to a science show and  workshops for P6 and 7.  We hope that you are enjoying working on the family learning challenge and look forward to seeing all of your entries.

Science Week

Science Week starts next week – Monday 4th February.  It will be a really busy and enjoyable week for all of our pupils.  There are lots of science activities taking place including visits to Dams to Darnley Country Park, led by the countryside rangers for 2 classes.  P2 and 3 visited the Science Centre last week. All classes will experience a workshop led by Generation Science or Think Science – these will really engage the children in learning and wondering about science. Barrhead High staff will be visiting classes and we also have our Primary 6 scientists who will be doing experiments with all classes.

Remember that there will be prizes awarded for the best entries in our shared family learning.  These are due in on Friday 15th and all entries will be displayed in school.
