The Great Braidbar Bake Off!!!!

As part of our Business and Enterprise topic Primary 3 thought it would be good if we could make something to sell at the Summer Fayre.  We brainstormed some ideas and came up with baking and selling our produce.  Our school now has a portable cooker which we can take into the classroom and we were the first to use it, to bake flapjacks.  Very nice tasting they were too!  We also made top hats, empire biscuits and crispy cakes.  It was a fantastic learning experience for us because it involved maths, language, health and wellbeing, science, art and design.  In science, we have been learning about plants so we planted seeds and decorated pots to put them in.  They germinated just in time for the fayre so we were able to sell them too!  We really enjoyed the whole experience, especially helping out at our stall on Saturday afternoon.DSC04457 (2) DSC04451 (2) DSC04448 DSC04449 DSC04455 DSC04452 (2)

Outdoor Learning

It was wonderful to see such lovely weather on Friday, so we decided to take advantage of it and have some outdoor learning.  Some of us went  to the school garden to make repeating and symmetrical patterns using leaves, sticks  and stones. The rest of us were learning to measure distance in metres and centimetres by throwing bean bags and then we used a trundle wheel to find out how far we had thrown them.

Katherine – I found it fun going into the garden making my patterns and I also spotted a ladybird!

Umair – I liked making the repeating patterns.

Rayyan – I threw my beanbag 12 metres!!!!

Yasmin – I really liked making my pattern and seeing a ladybird so close up.  It had a symmetrical pattern of spots!

Shazil – I threw my beanbag 8m which is 800 cm.DSC04396 DSC04397 DSC04398 DSC04399 DSC04391 DSC04392 DSC04394 DSC04395

Our Egyptian Shadufs

We have really enjoyed learning about  Ancient Egypt.  We were set a challenge to  design and build a Shaduf.  A shaduf was used in Ancient Egyptian times to  collect water.  The water was taken from the River Nile and was used for a variety of purposes such as cooking, drinking and watering the crops.  It was lovely to see all our different ideas and the recyclable materials that we used in our designs.

Aidan – I used a shoe box, some canes for the ground and tissue paper to represent the River Nile.

An update from P3B

On Friday we celebrated Red Nose day.  We all enjoyed wearing our red noses and we brought in donations for charity to help children less fortunate than us.  Lots of the teachers painted their faces.  We think Mrs Brown should win a prize for the funniest face!

We also had a visit from the Scottish S.P.C.A.  They told us lots of information about helping animals that might be in danger. Alan showed many of the pieces of equipment he  uses in his job.  We were surprised to find out the piece of equipment he uses most is a towel or a blanket.

After attending the Pupil Council meeting Jack reported back to the class about the plans for the new playground activities.  He showed us a photograph of where everything will be.  We are really looking forward to trying them out when we come back to school after the Spring break.DSC04347

Here is a photograph of our new playground.

Welcome to Baby Ava

storkJack was delighted this morning to announce the birth of a baby sister.  She has been named Ava and weighs eight pounds.   Baby Ava and her mum are both very well and we are sure Jack will be a wonderful big brother.  We are all very excited about this lovely news and are looking forward to meeting her soon.

Magnets

Our science topic this term has been magnets.  We have really enjoyed learning all about them.  We investigated magnets at home and found lots of places where magnets are used.  It has been a really good topic because we have been able to do lots of activities and investigations.  We made a magnetic fishing game, investigated which poles attract and which ones repel, made a compass to show north and this week we experimented the force of different magnets.

DSC04323

It was fun doing the repelling and attracting activity.  We learned that if two poles the same they repel and if they are different they attract.

We liked making a homemade compass.  Very useful if you get lost!

Our Egyptian Experience

On Thursday we went with our friends in Primary 3B on a trip to the Burrell Collection in Pollock Park.

We learned that Sir William Burrell was a very wealthy shipping tycoon who loved to collect artefacts from all over the World.  He began his collection when he was only a teenager and when he died, he gifted all his possessions to the City of Glasgow so that everyone could come and see them.

We were there to see his Egyptian collection and we were met by Greig who told us lots of interesting fact about things we have not learned about yet.  The best bit was learning about mummification.  We are looking forward to learning even more about it from Mrs McNaught and from doing our own research.

After that, Greig took us to a workshop where we were able to handle objects from over three thousand years ago.  We had to wear gloves so that the oil and acid from our fingers did not ruin the artefacts.   It was funny to think that a rich Egyptian lady had actually worn the necklace we were holding.

We are looking forward to learning even more about this very clever, ancient civilization.

Burns’ Day Celebration

To celebrate the birth of Robert Burns, we all dressed up in something tartan. We were really looking forward to the school assembly.
Mr. Ross ( Kristin and Nathan’s Grandfather) played the accordion to welcome us into the hall. We sang a lot of Scottish songs together and our favourite was ‘Three Craws’.  After that, Miss Innes danced the ‘Highland Fling’. She looked amazing in her kilt. She has very kindly offered to run a Highland Dance class after school.

Welcome Back

Primary Three would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year.  We really enjoyed our Christmas holidays and are back feeling refreshed and ready for lots of new learning.  As a conclusion to our last topic, we have made a diorama showing the different layers of the ‘Rainforest’.  Our new IDL topic is ‘Ancient Egyptians’.  Mrs McNaught has organised a trip to the Burrell where we will be able to look and hold many artefacts from Egyptian times. We will take lots of photographs to show you!
