P6b Bakeoff

Today we baked Fairtrade muffins in class. In our groups we made hot chocolate muffins, chocolate chip muffins, Malteser muffins and button muffins.

We developed our communication and  team work skills and our instruction following.

They tasted scrumptious!

Fairtrade Thursday

We are learning all about Fairtrade with P6a.  Yesterday we walked to Morrisons to find Fairtrade products.  Then we compared them with non Fairtrade products to find the difference in price.   It was quite hard to do because there were not many Fairtrade products in Morrisons!

We found out that some Fairtrade products were more expensive than those that were not Fairtrade.  Even although they are more expensive we know they are worth buying because they give farmers a fair amount of money for their work and they stop children working on farms or plantations.

Panda Update

005Our clay pandas have now dried and we painted them after the February holiday. Tomorrow, during Golden Time, we will glaze them to give them a protective layer. We cannot wait to take them home to show our families!

Pandas are a deemed to be ‘national treasures’ in China so we decided to re-create these giant and lovable creatures using clay.

Have a closer look at our wonderful cherry blossom tree pictures. These were created through the technique of ‘blow painting’.

We used straws to blow the watery paint mixture around the paper which created very effective branches. Neon pink paint and tissue paper were then added to finish our designs.

Zoo-ed Visit

Emma3 021

Last Thursday we had a special visit from Fiona at Zoo-ed who came to tell us the story behind the animals of the Chinese Zodiac.

2016-year-of-the-monkey

2016 is the year of the Monkey but we were all born under the year of the Boar, apart from Zoha, who was born on the year of the Rat!

Fiona brought some very cute and some VERY interesting animals and reptiles along with her and of course we got to have a gentle hold too!

There was Henry and Rizzle the rats! Philip the guinea-pig and Boudicca-Rose the rabbit. Dexter the bearded dragon and Angus the corn snake.

Some of us were extremely brave!  Take a closer look – especially the pictures of Angus…eek!

Chinese Tangrams

tangrams%202During Problem Solving this week we worked in pairs to solve tangram puzzles. Chinese tangrams have been used in China since ancient times.

They usually consist of 7 flat shapes called tans but our first challenge was to solve a 5-piece tangram. All tans have to be touching and they can’t overlap!

We had to create a candlestick, candle and a boat. Afterwards to challenge us even further we made Chinese inspired objects using a 7-piece tangram puzzle.

We made the boat – yay!

Next week, after the holiday weekend we will be cooking some Chinese inspired dishes including stir-fry. We will update the blog with a post to show the fruits of our labour!

We guess the only question is: Would you like noodles or rice with that?

Woks at the ready!

The Romans – true or false?

RomanSoldier

Today we worked in groups of 4 to discuss some statements linked to our topic on ‘The Romans’. We had to use positive listening and talking skills throughout. We made sure we demonstrated eye-contact, taking turns to speak and respecting other peoples’ opinions.

BlogUpdate 017

Do you think this statement is True or False?

” The Romans built Hadrian’s Wall.” Answers on a Postcard please!

Giffnock Library Visit

Today we visited the library to investigate old maps and pictures of Giffnock from the past.

It was really interesting to see how land was used back in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Giffnock was a thriving farming and agricultural town with a sandstone quarry; producing sandstone for around the world.

We particularly enjoyed looking at old-fashioned handwriting on the old census’ and pictures on the iPads.
